About The Position

This role leads internal communications for Mitacs, connecting a workforce of over 300 staff members in a remote-first environment across Canada. As a key member of the Communications team, the specialist will clearly communicate corporate objectives, deliver engaging content, promote awareness and alignment, support change initiatives, advise the CEO and Mitacs Executive Committee (MEC), and collaborate with departments like Equity, Diversity, Inclusivity and Culture to foster culture and employee engagement. The role also supports corporate and external communications for events and announcements in collaboration with the Communications & Public Affairs team. A critical aspect involves preparing written communications for the CEO and MEC. The ideal candidate will have experience planning and executing virtual, in-person, and hybrid corporate events, Town Halls, and All-Staff meetings, as well as crafting clear messages for all staff. Oversight of Mitacs’ intranet, the Mitacs Hub, is also included. The specialist will act as a Communications advisor to various teams, ensuring consistent and cohesive information distribution through appropriate channels and at the right times.

Requirements

  • A degree or diploma in communications, journalism, or a related field.
  • At least five years of experience in corporate, internal, or employee communications.
  • Talented storyteller and experienced strategic communicator capable of crafting compelling messages and engaging staff.
  • Proven track record applying data and analyses to developing communications strategies and coordinating impactful messages.
  • Extensive experience in the planning, execution, and evaluation of internal communications.
  • Ability to balance being a strong team player with working independently in a fast-paced and flexible environment.
  • Experience with employee engagement and change management communications.
  • High degree of emotional intelligence, including the ability to adapt to different working and communication styles.
  • Ability to exercise tact and discretion when working with sensitive communications.
  • Excellent writing, editing, speaking, and presentation skills.
  • Experience directing and/or supporting on-site event set-up, logistics, agendas, and audio-visual requirements for in-person staff and corporate events.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deliver under tight deadlines.
  • Written and spoken English fluency is required.
  • Knowledge of written and spoken French is a strong asset.

Responsibilities

  • Lead internal communications strategy with a focus on transformative change, strategic alignment, EDI, and Culture, under the supervision of the Director, Communications & Public Affairs.
  • Oversee planning and execution of virtual, in-person, and hybrid Town Hall and All-Staff meetings, including support for agendas, briefings, presentations, event setup, and remarks.
  • Support the planning and on-site execution of corporate events at the Mitacs office, such as MOU signings, international visits, and Mitacs Connect networking events.
  • Develop communications materials from ideation to final product, including stories, videos, newsletter content, presentations, and other collateral.
  • Advise and support senior leaders in communicating corporate objectives and driving employee engagement; support all-staff communications on behalf of the MEC.
  • Collaborate with all teams across the organization to create strategies based on specific needs and challenges, ensuring alignment with Mitacs’ corporate strategy.
  • Develop and execute communications campaigns that support change and business transformation.
  • Assess and address barriers to optimizing internal communications.
  • Collaborate with EDI and Culture teams to ensure communications support Mitacs’ Strategic Plan, Inclusive Innovation Action Plan (IIAP), employee engagement, and culture transformation goals.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources, using employee feedback, metrics, and data to drive communications improvements.
  • Collaborate with the Mitacs Enterprise Transformation (MET) team to lead all internal and external MET communications and support related enterprise-wide change management goals and plans.
  • Collaborate with the Communications & Public Affairs team to support corporate and external communications, events, and marketing, including website postings, drafting impact stories, and event preparations.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of team processes, operations, and best practices.

  • Hiring Range: $65,325 - $82,745
