About The Position

This role analyzes, designs, develops, implements, and evaluates performance-based technical training for employees with a focus on Operations instruction, specifically simulator operations. Delivers simulator training in a control room environment at the Technical Training Center or on site at a generating location. Delivers a blend of instructor-led training in a classroom setting, via in person and remote methods, and other operations courses that support the fleet. Supervises trainees and other personnel in simulator and classroom activities, teaches specific technical subjects, and evaluates knowledge, behavior, retention, and mastery of concepts. Provides the instruction necessary for candidates to complete the Control Room Operator or Lead Maintenance Operator qualification process. Coordinates with site supervision to assess and provide feedback on trainee progress. Works across Power Generation in a consulting role as a subject matter expert in specific areas of operational support. Focuses on creating an excellent culture of safety, environmental stewardship, with an emphasis on applying Human Performance tools and defenses. Assists in the creation and revision of technical training materials in conjunction with a training specialist, using generally accepted instructional design processes. Understands and can apply adult learning theory concepts. Able to evaluate the effectiveness of training as delivered and revise material accordingly. Able to identify participants with learning difficulties and tutor them or determine the best learning method to use to gain understanding. Is knowledgeable of the different equipment and distributive control systems (DCS) at generating stations and incorporates into training materials. Travels to different locations to take equipment pictures, obtain drawings or information to include in training materials; writes station specific training materials to improve understanding of local equipment. Instructs classes at station locations when necessary. Administers oral boards and assesses knowledge for advanced placement of trainees. Consults with the Power Generation Excellence team to clarify and define best practice work procedures and processes. Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of related experience in coal or gas turbine operations with a Bachelor's degree (or, 7+ years of experience with an Associate's Degree; or 9+ years with a high school diploma)
  • Graduate of the Operator Development Program or the Maintenance Operator Development Program
  • Knowledge and/or experience operating boilers, steam turbines, and gas turbines, using a distributive control system (Emerson Ovation, Mitsubishi Netmation, GE- Mark VIe, ABB 800xA, DeltaV, etc).
  • Sufficient operations-related knowledge of power generating systems and controls, control room systems, operating and maintenance procedures, environmental regulations, and power generations standards in an industrial setting.
  • Advocate of safe work practices at the stations to include Safety Committee member, Human Performance advocate, completes Human Performance Observations
  • Strong communication skills to include – instructor experience, presentation skills, use of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Ability to assess readiness in classroom, simulator, and generating site knowledge
  • Capability to understand highly technical training materials and teaching them to trainees on an entry level
  • Able to handle most work and aspects of the job using knowledge of the field (skills and/or abilities that provide subject matter experiences and understanding of best practices and procedures for operational tasks)
  • Ability to make decisions independently
  • Ability to provide assistance, advice, and solutions to peers, customers, and co-workers

Nice To Haves

  • Previous Control Room Operator or Lead Maintenance Operator experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience in developing and presenting training or safety topics to other personnel preferred
  • Leadership skills in supervising, coaching, training, or mentoring employees is preferred
