Senior Infrastructure Engineer II

Kit
•$197,000 - $197,000•Remote

About The Position

Kit is hiring a full-time individual contributor to own a substantial part of its core infrastructure, including databases, Kubernetes, version upgrades, platform tooling, and day-to-day infrastructure support. The engineer will build paved paths that help engineers, non-engineers, and AI agents test and ship changes safely. The role emphasizes end-to-end ownership of production systems, automation, thoughtful use of AI, and making infrastructure work easier for others. Kit is a fully remote company with teams across the globe, working mostly on East Coast time. This position participates in a three-person on-call rotation, approximately one week in three, and must be able to respond to pages outside usual working hours while on call. The new hire will progressively take on infrastructure support, improve monitoring and systems, shadow and then join on-call, and become the primary owner of core infrastructure areas. Within the first year, the role is expected to lead infrastructure projects independently, help maintain uptime of 99.9% or better, reduce page volume, identify cost savings, and deliver paved paths used by engineers, non-engineers, and AI agents. The role reports to the VP of Engineering and works closely with two named engineering colleagues and product engineers across Kit. The position is offered at level 4 with a standardized salary of $197,000. Kit offers equity, profit sharing, retirement matching, health coverage, paid leave, learning and equipment budgets, and other benefits.

Requirements

  • Around 7 or more years of experience in infrastructure, platform, DevOps, or SRE roles.
  • Experience running production infrastructure on AWS at scale, including managed relational databases, networking, and load balancing.
  • Experience operating Kubernetes in production, including upgrades, capacity planning, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience managing infrastructure as code and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience building monitoring and alerting that catches real problems early and minimizes noisy pages.
  • Ability to diagnose complex, multi-service incidents and resolve underlying causes.
  • Experience reducing cloud costs through right-sizing and reserved capacity without harming reliability.
  • Ability to write clear runbooks, documentation, and decision write-ups.
  • Experience owning production infrastructure for a product where downtime costs customers money.
  • Experience carrying a pager for systems owned and improving the on-call experience over time.
  • Experience leading a major upgrade or migration, such as a database or Kubernetes version upgrade, with little or no customer impact.
  • Experience building self-service tooling or paved paths adopted by other engineers.
  • Ability to work on a small infrastructure team without handing problems off to specialists.
  • Willingness to take on call as a core responsibility in a three-person rotation.
  • Self-directed approach to finding infrastructure work, setting priorities with a colleague, and following through on improvements.
  • Good judgment and accountability when using AI.
  • Ability to work with some time-zone flexibility around East Coast working hours; on-call response may occur outside usual working hours.

Nice To Haves

  • Diagnose complex, multi-service incidents calmly and fix underlying causes.
  • Reduce cloud costs through right-sizing and reserved capacity without compromising reliability.
  • Participate in a three-person on-call rotation, taking a full share of on-call responsibility and responding to pages outside usual working hours during on-call weeks.
  • Find recurring sources of pages and reduce or eliminate them.
  • Build self-service tooling and paved paths, including safe sandbox environments for AI agents or non-engineers to build and test changes.
  • Document runbooks, architecture knowledge, decisions, and tradeoffs so others can build on the work.
  • Lead infrastructure projects independently and support uptime of 99.9% or better.
  • Work with product engineers and teams outside engineering that depend on infrastructure.
  • Use AI thoughtfully to improve quality and velocity while maintaining sound judgment and accountability.
