About The Position

The Ministry of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration (JETI) enhances Alberta's competitive advantage by creating the conditions that will help more Albertans prosper. The Economic Strategy and Investment (ESI) Division is focused on ensuring strategies and related policies are developed with a broad economic lens and line of sight to economic growth, job creation and investment attraction through evidence informed decisions. This position supports the Supply Chain, Logistics, and Construction team and undertakes research, analysis and project coordination activities to inform strategic decision-making by senior leadership and affected stakeholders related to economic policy and strategy development. Reporting to the Manager, the Senior Industry Development Officer supports engagement with industry stakeholders, responds to Action Requests, provides research, writing and project coordination assistance to the unit, and is responsible for the development, collection, analysis, evaluation and dissemination of economic, industry environment and business climate information.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Economics, Arts, Public Administration, Political Science or other related fields plus 4 years progressively related experience.
  • Research, analysis and critical thinking skills to assess economic and industry issues.
  • Strong writing skills to prepare briefings, action requests, reports and recommendations.
  • Effective stakeholder engagement, communication and relationship-building abilities.
  • Project coordination and organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Experience analyzing quantitative and qualitative data from multiple sources.
  • Ability to conduct environmental scans and identify emerging trends and risks.
  • Sound judgment, political acuity and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Alberta's economy, priority sectors, and supply chain, logistics and construction issues.
  • Experience in industry development, economic policy, strategic planning or stakeholder relations.
  • Experience preparing executive briefings, ministerial correspondence or strategic reports for Senior Management.
  • Experience working with industry associations, businesses and government partners.
  • Understanding of economic indicators, labour market trends and investment issues.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare action requests and briefings in response to Premier/Minister/Deputy Minister/Assistant Deputy Minister requests using individual research and coordinating input from other branches and subject matter experts.
  • Respond to department briefing requirements and stakeholder information requests in support of key ministry outcomes related to industry growth, job creation and investment.
  • Research, analyze and prepare reports, position papers and recommendations for decision-makers on issues with industry development implications to inform policy, strategy and program development in the Ministry of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration, and in other Government of Alberta ministries whose policies impact industry development.
  • Participate in the identification of issues and opportunities based on the analysis of quantitative data and qualitative industry intelligence from various internal and external sources.
  • Engage in ongoing jurisdictional and environmental scanning of priority sectors to develop sector knowledge and maintain an understanding of industry developments and stakeholders needs.
  • Identify significant economic shifts, emerging issues and identify those that may have an impact on Alberta's economy and priority sectors.
  • Ensure Industry Relations team members are informed of activities in other divisions, ministries and other levels of government that may affect industry development programs and stakeholder engagement.
  • Ensure Industry Relations team members are informed and aware of industry development policies and best practices in other provincial jurisdictions.
