About The Position

The Senior Tax Analyst, Sales & Use Tax and Excise Tax supports end-to-end U.S. indirect tax compliance with a primary focus on multi-state Sales & Use Tax and Federal and State Excise Tax obligations. The role supports a complex portfolio of tobacco, smokeless tobacco, and modern nicotine products and operates in a highly regulated environment with elevated audit and enforcement risk. This position is execution-focused and plays a critical role in ensuring accurate tax calculation, timely filings and payments, and strong supporting documentation across jurisdictions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in U.S. indirect tax compliance, with exposure to sales & use tax and/or excise tax.
  • Experience in tobacco, nicotine, alcohol, or other excise-taxed or highly regulated industries strongly preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills and comfort working with large, detailed data sets.
  • High attention to detail and ability to meet recurring deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Fluent in English

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience supporting a sales tax engine (e.g., Avalara AvaTax, Vertex, or ONESOURCE).
  • Exposure to Federal excise tax concepts and TTB-administered filings.
  • Experience supporting audits or responding to tax authority inquiries.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and support multi-state sales & use tax return filings, including data compilation, review, and reconciliation.
  • Assist with sales tax nexus monitoring (economic and physical) and support registration and deregistration activities as needed.
  • Support taxability determinations for products, services, promotions, and new business models under state and local rules.
  • Execute day-to-day activities related to the U.S. sales tax engine (e.g., AvaTax), including data validations, issue resolution, and testing support.
  • Support sales tax audits and notices by gathering data, preparing schedules, and assisting with responses.
  • Prepare and support Federal and State excise tax filings for tobacco, smokeless tobacco, and nicotine products.
  • Compile and validate excise tax data, including product volumes, rates, classifications, and tax bases.
  • Support compliance with federal excise tax requirements administered by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), where applicable.
  • Assist with interpretation and application of state excise tax rules that vary by product type and jurisdiction.
  • Support excise tax audits, inquiries, and assessments by preparing supporting documentation and analyses.
  • Perform reconciliations and reasonableness checks to ensure accuracy of indirect tax filings and payments.
  • Maintain organized, audit-ready workpapers and supporting documentation.
  • Support internal controls related to indirect tax compliance, including review checklists and sign-off procedures.
  • Identify opportunities to improve data quality, automation, and process efficiency across Sales & Use Tax and Excise Tax activities.
  • Collaborate with IT, Data & Insights, and Finance teams to resolve data issues and improve upstream tax input.
