The Senior Herd Caretaker position is responsible for the care and welfare of livestock, as well as cleaning and maintaining work environment/facilities. Under direct supervision, duties include feeding, watering, taking measurements, recording research data, and the care and cleaning of equipment. The role involves maintaining and recording feed inventories, observing livestock welfare, and reporting any possible problems, including illness or uncharacteristic behavior, to the immediate supervisor. The position may also assist in data collection, maintain animal health programs, and perform regular vaccination programs. Additionally, the Senior Herd Caretaker conducts agricultural work plans from detailed instruction, assists maintenance or other personnel in the repair and maintenance of facilities and/or equipment, and oversees the work of designated personnel and/or students in the absence of the Farm Crew Leader or research personnel. The role performs farm labor in support of ag operations and hay/feed production. The position requires participation in an Occupational Health Program, training in standard operating procedures, and training in IACUC procedures, requirements, and compliance. This position is located at the Grassland Unit at Plateau Research & Education Center.
