About The Position

The Senior Health Educator (SHE) is responsible for initiating, coordinating, and providing tobacco prevention and education activities throughout Miami-Dade County under the supervision of the Health Education Program Manager (HEPM). The SHE will assist the HEPM with the development and submission of the tobacco prevention work plan, focusing on preventing tobacco initiation among youth and young adults, promoting cessation, and reducing exposure to secondhand smoke. The role involves initiating, coordinating, and providing health promotion and public health education to businesses, community organizations, and the Health Department. This includes educating and consulting with organizations on the benefits of tobacco-free policies, providing information on the Cessation Access initiative, and assisting with policy change creation and implementation. The SHE will conduct assessments of local organizations, maintain contact, and track progress towards policy change quarterly. The position also involves working with local partners to educate municipalities and state government about smoke-free environments and the Tobacco Free Public Spaces initiative, and participating in meetings, trainings, and health promotion events. Additionally, the SHE will assist the HEPM in preparing and facilitating meetings of the Consortium for a Healthier Miami Dade, ensuring program alignment with tobacco initiatives, and supporting the Cessation Access subcommittee. The role includes recruiting partnership members, providing information for website updates, and developing culturally sensitive educational presentations on chronic disease and healthy lifestyles, with a focus on tobacco use and secondhand smoke. Collaboration with other staff on health promotion materials and media campaigns is expected. The SHE will collect and analyze data for program outcomes, enter reports into the Automated Tobacco Activity Collection System (ATACS), and submit regular reports to ensure compliance with State Guidelines. Procurement justifications for tobacco prevention initiatives will also be prepared. The position promotes the Florida Quitline and refers community members to cessation services, tracks referrals, and promotes empowerment through increased knowledge of tobacco issues. Press releases and other information will be disseminated, and a tobacco-free lifestyle will be promoted in the community. The SHE will represent the County Health Department and the Tobacco Prevention and Control Program on local committees, boards, and coalitions, and attend required training. Local and regional travel may be required, and training will be provided to tobacco prevention advocates. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of health education.
  • Knowledge of the methods of data collection.

  • Ability to collect and analyze data.
  • Ability to collect, evaluate and analyze data to develop alternative recommendations, solve problems and other activities relating to the improvement of policies and practices.

  • Incumbent in this position is required to be tobacco free and not use electronic nicotine delivery systems.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Access to personal vehicle to perform job related duties.
  • Experience in public speaking.
  • Ability to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English.

Responsibilities

  • Initiating, coordinating, and providing tobacco prevention and education activities throughout Miami-Dade County.
  • Assisting with the development and submission of the tobacco prevention work plan.
  • Initiating, coordinating, and providing health promotion and public health education to businesses, community organizations, and the Health Department.
  • Educating and consulting with businesses and community organizations on the benefits of tobacco free policies and providing information on the Cessation Access initiative.
  • Conducting assessments of local organizations, making and maintaining contact with local organizations and tracking progress towards policy change on a quarterly basis.

  • Participating in the activities of the Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade by attending and assisting at monthly meetings and events.
  • Support/facilitate meetings with the Cessation Access subcommittee.
  • Assists in recruiting partnership members.
  • Developing culturally sensitive educational presentations on chronic disease and healthy lifestyles, with a focus on the effects of tobacco use and secondhand smoke.
  • Collaborating with other staff members on the development and delivery of health promotion and health education materials.
  • Collaborating with the Health Education Program Manager in the development of media campaigns and county-wide activities.
  • Collecting and analyzing data to ensure program outcomes.
  • Entering quarterly progress reports into the Automated Tobacco Activity Collection System (ATACS).
  • Submitting regular reports as required to ensure appropriate progress on work plan, agency objectives and as required to ensure compliance with State Guidelines.
  • Providing written justification for procurement of services/products to promote initiatives for tobacco prevention and education.
  • Promoting the Florida Quitline and referring community members to tobacco cessation services offered at the local level.
  • Keeping track of referrals for cessation services.
  • Promoting empowerment by increasing skills, knowledge of tobacco issues and prevention.
  • Preparing and disseminating press news releases and other information to communities through the FDOHMD Office of Communication and Legislative Affairs.
  • Promoting a tobacco-free lifestyle in the community.
  • Representing the County Health Department and the Tobacco Prevention and Control Program on local committees, boards, and coalitions, as assigned.
  • Attending scheduled training as required.
  • Assuring that tobacco prevention advocates receive training on effective tobacco prevention and control strategies and the program’s mission, goals, and objectives.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
