About The Position

Teradyne’s Compute Test Division develops semiconductor test instrumentation, platforms, and integrated test-cell solutions for advanced compute devices. The Senior Hardware Engineering Manager manages the DC/power instrumentation hardware team and serves as Technical Project Leader for its most complex programs. Based in North Reading, Massachusetts, the role spans concept through production release and lifecycle transition. The role is accountable for product and engineering success, including competitiveness, time to market, development cost, cost of goods, quality, reliability, and customer readiness. The manager leads hardware engineers directly and leads broader cross-functional teams—including software, FPGA, systems, mechanical, calibration, verification, manufacturing, and operations—through influence rather than reporting authority. The role co-leads programs with a Program Manager under a “two-in-the-box” model: this position owns product and technical success, while the Program Manager owns planning, schedule, budget, scope, and governance. The position combines product and business leadership, technical and people leadership, program execution, risk and change management, and cross-functional stakeholder engagement. It requires a systems perspective, the ability to align diverse teams, and sound, timely trade-off decisions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) required.
  • 10 or more years of hands-on hardware design and development experience, focused on board-level (PCB) products.
  • 5 or more years of people-management experience overseeing experienced engineers and/or managers across two or more disciplines, with responsibility for hiring, performance reviews, and department budget.
  • 5 or more years in product leadership roles for complex hardware products.
  • Track record of delivering complex hardware products from concept to manufacturing, with end-to-end ownership.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and managing multiple concurrent projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with customers and translate market needs into product requirements.
  • Experience overseeing vendors and contractors.

Responsibilities

  • Own the overall success of assigned DC/power instrumentation programs, including competitiveness, time to market, development cost, cost of goods, quality, reliability, and customer readiness.
  • Define and drive product vision, roadmap, and strategy in alignment with business goals, customer use cases, and the product’s contribution to the broader CTD portfolio.
  • Represent the product with Product Management and field teams, translating market and customer needs into engineering objectives and product requirements.
  • Balance performance, quality, cost, manufacturability, serviceability, reuse, scalability, and schedule in product decisions.
  • Manage the hardware engineering team, including hiring, coaching, developing, and directing engineers and product team members; foster innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Establish and communicate the technical vision, product architecture, integration strategy, and development approach.
  • Lead technical trade studies and decisions across hardware, software, FPGA, mechanical, thermal, calibration, signal delivery, automation, and manufacturing.
  • Ensure subsystem requirements are defined, allocated, traced, integrated, verified, and validated at the system level.
  • Serve as the primary technical escalation point and drive timely resolution of complex cross-disciplinary issues.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership during critical prototype, integration, verification, and production-readiness phases.
  • Co-lead the core team with the Program Manager and maintain joint accountability for an executable, high-confidence plan across concurrent projects.
  • Drive technical execution across contributing functional groups with focus on the overall product.
  • Lead technical design, integration, and readiness reviews; phase-gate assessments; and recovery planning.
  • Drive timely decisions on priorities, scope, technical direction, dependencies, and resource deployment; direct engineering resources where needed.
  • Ensure execution follows applicable development, quality, safety, regulatory, and lifecycle processes.
  • Champion product-development best practices, from requirements definition and design reviews through verification, validation, and release.
  • Identify technical, integration, supplier, resource, quality, and execution risks early and ensure they are actively addressed and retired.
  • Define mitigation, contingency, learning, and verification plans for risks and ensure those plans are executed.
  • Identify opportunities to improve schedule, cost, product quality, reuse, team effectiveness, or competitive differentiation.
  • Partner with the Program Manager on scope and change control and communicate impacts to stakeholders.
  • Build alignment across Engineering, Product Management, NPI, Operations, Supply Chain, Quality, Applications, Service, and business leadership.
  • Lead beyond the direct team through credibility, influence, collaboration, and sound judgment rather than formal reporting authority.
  • Consult functional leaders on staffing, technical capability, resource alignment, and development priorities.
  • Keep sponsors and senior leaders informed of status, risks, decisions, trade-offs, and required support; communicate progress, priorities, and vision to stakeholders.
  • Participate in customer, supplier, and partner discussions concerning requirements, capabilities, roadmaps, and issue resolution.
  • Oversee technical engagement with vendors and contractors to ensure quality and timely delivery of components and solutions.
