About The Position

General Motors is hiring a Senior Hardware Design Engineer for its Compute & Connectivity Hardware team within Vehicle Software & Electronics Engineering. The team develops hardware platforms—including compute, connectivity, networking, displays, and other electronics—for GM software-defined vehicles. The role focuses on electrical design, development, review, and integration of electronic controllers for next-generation vehicle architecture, while building partnerships with internal and external customers and suppliers. The engineer will lead product development and integration activities and develop PCB layouts for existing and new architecture-based ECUs. The work includes collaborating with PCBA and ECAD engineers, running simulations, creating and reviewing layouts, participating in design direction meetings, and working with circuit designers, system engineers, packaging engineers, and subject-matter experts. Designs are expected to meet GM specifications and testing requirements from early hardware through production, while addressing performance, reliability, manufacturability, assembly, and cost. This is a hybrid role. The selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least three times per week, or at another frequency set by their manager. The role is not eligible for relocation benefits.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
  • Professional experience creating digital/analog hardware interfaces, including schematic creation and/or PCB layout, simulation, and supporting documentation.
  • At least 5 years of working experience in PCB layout design.
  • Experience with design and analysis tools such as Mentor Graphics for schematic and layout.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous industry experience with infotainment, telematics, or connectivity.
  • 10 or more years of experience in PCB layout design.
  • Knowledge of high-speed communication buses such as Ethernet, PCIe, and SerDes.
  • Experience in high-density, high-speed communication and RF layout.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, integrate, and review electrical designs for electronic controllers used in GM vehicle programs.
  • Develop PCB layout designs for existing and new architecture-based ECUs.
  • Collaborate with PCBA and ECAD engineers, run simulations, create PCB layouts, and participate in design direction meetings.
  • Create, lead, and verify layout designs, including conducting design rule checks (DRC) and design for manufacturability (DFM) checks.
  • Work with circuit designers, system engineers, packaging engineers, and other design teams to understand requirements and constraints and optimize layout designs.
  • Select appropriate technologies and processes for layout designs based on project requirements and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Work with SI/PI/EMC/thermal/mechanical subject-matter experts to optimize performance and reliability.
  • Support ECAD librarians in developing ECAD library parts that meet PCBA DFM and GM resiliency requirements.
  • Collaborate with component engineering, procurement, and supply-chain teams to select components for PCBA designs.
  • Apply design for assembly (DFA) principles to optimize PCBA designs for efficient assembly.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement, cost reduction, and quality enhancement in PCBA manufacturing.
  • Use engineering tools and processes to develop components and systems for vehicle programs and achieve program milestones through effective program management.
  • Coach and lead suppliers toward timely and excellent execution of program work.
  • Build strong partnerships and foster collaboration with internal and external team members.
