About The Position

Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services (AAMHCS) is a Community Health Centre that aims to provide services and addresses system inequities to improve health outcomes for the most vulnerable immigrants, refugees, and their communities. The Centre envisions a future in which Toronto’s diverse communities achieve health with dignity. The Seniors Program at Access Alliance provides fitness and recreational programming and outreach to immigrant and refugee seniors (55+) and their communities, living in Toronto, with a particular focus on those living in the Syme-Woolner (west Toronto) and Taylor-Massey Oakridge (east Toronto) neighborhoods. We are looking for an energetic, caring, and detail-oriented person to be part of our Seniors Team. Experienced in seniors’ health and wellness, the Seniors Program Worker – Fitness, Health & Wellness will coordinate and facilitate programs with newcomer and immigrant seniors. The position is responsible for delivering programs, facilitating workshops / sessions / programs/events, supporting research, conducting evaluations, and integrating seniors into programs.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Health Sciences, Human Kinetics/Kinesiology, Physical Education/current certification to undertake responsibilities of a fitness instructor or a combination of relevant education and work experience.
  • Recent, valid CPR and First Aid Certificates
  • Minimum 1 year of experience running fitness classes
  • Minimum 3 years front-line experience in community-based work doing outreach and group facilitation
  • Ability to travel within Toronto

Nice To Haves

  • Seniors Fitness Instructor Certification or willingness to work towards it
  • Good knowledge of health promotion, health education and health issues affecting newcomer communities
  • Thorough knowledge of community resources and services available to immigrant and refugee seniors
  • Excellent computer skills, including ability to use Instagram, Canva, Microsoft 365, etc.
  • Experience in running programs and activities, organizing special events, coordinating engagement of other staff, volunteers, students and community members
  • Experience working with low-income, multiracial, multilingual, 2SLGBTQIA+, people with disabilities, and seniors.
  • Experience working in inter-disciplinary teams
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with crisis and conflict, and to maintain appropriate boundaries
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to multitask, work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of team
  • Ability to identify partnerships and make connections in the community
  • Ability to speak and write fluently in English and at least one of the following languages would be an asset: Arabic, Bengali, Tigrinya, Vietnamese, Urdu, Spanish
  • Experience coordinating volunteers

Responsibilities

  • Lead fitness classes and health education workshops at various sites and locations
  • Co-ordinate and lead seniors’ events, gatherings, and field trips
  • Network with colleagues and other organizations to conduct successful outreach and integration of newcomer seniors and older adults into programs
  • Identify and support the development of formal/informal partnerships with other agencies
  • Recruit, orient, train and direct volunteers, peers, and students to assist with outreach, programs and event delivery to support the development of the Seniors Program
  • As assigned, participate in and support research on health and community needs involving and mobilizing the community of interest around the research
  • Contribute to developing perspectives, which inform programs and service planning, community activities and capacity building
  • Support initiatives with educational institutions to promote the availability of the Centre as a learning site
  • Plan and evaluate groups, workshops, events, etc.
  • Participate in Centre working groups, and projects
  • Submit program statistics and reports on a timely basis
  • Support the development of funding proposals for future programs
  • Carry out other duties as may be assigned from time to time
