Senior Firmware Engineer, Ground Software

Neros Technologies•Torrance, CA
•$180,000 - $252,000

About The Position

Neros is hiring a Senior Firmware Engineer for its Ground Software team to build firmware for ground control hardware used by operators to fly aircraft and view its video. The role spans microcontroller and embedded Linux targets and owns the latency and reliability of the operator control path. The engineer will take firmware from the bench into field use and work with flight software, electrical engineering, and test teams.

Requirements

  • Strong embedded C, C++, or Rust experience in resource-constrained environments, including firmware shipped on real hardware in the field.
  • Real-time firmware experience, including interrupts, DMA, timing budgets, and troubleshooting issues that occur under load.
  • Hands-on board bring-up and hardware debugging experience using equipment such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
  • Working knowledge of embedded communication interfaces such as UART, SPI, I2C, USB, and Ethernet.
  • Track record of taking firmware from first boot to production with light direction.
  • Test discipline appropriate for firmware relied on in the field.

Nice To Haves

  • Embedded Linux experience building services and device interfaces; Yocto or Buildroot exposure.
  • Linux networking and IP-based radio or datalink integration.
  • Experience with video pipelines on embedded hardware, including capture, decode, display, and latency.
  • RC radio or ground controller firmware experience, such as ExpressLRS or EdgeTX/OpenTX.
  • Experience moving a product from a microcontroller to an embedded Linux platform.
  • Experience flying FPV, RC, or drones generally.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain firmware for ground control hardware across microcontroller and embedded Linux targets.
  • Own operator input handling, the ground-side communication link to the aircraft, and telemetry and video reception.
  • Own latency and reliability across the operator control path, from input to transmission.
  • Define the ground side of the aircraft-to-ground interface with the flight software team, including behavior when the link degrades.
  • Bring up and debug new ground hardware alongside electrical engineering.
  • Write unit and integration tests, partnering with the test organization on hardware-in-the-loop and field testing.

Benefits

  • Highly competitive equity grants are considered part of Neros' total compensation package.
