Senior Firmware Engineer, Ground Software

Neros Technologies•Torrance, CA
•$180,000 - $252,000

About The Position

Neros is a defense technology company that designs and manufactures high-performance unmanned systems. As a Senior Firmware Engineer on the Ground Software team, you will build firmware for ground control hardware used by field operators to fly aircraft and view its data. The role spans microcontroller and embedded Linux targets and is responsible for latency and reliability in the operator control path, from the bench through field use. You will develop and maintain ground-side functionality for operator inputs, aircraft communications, and telemetry and video reception. You will work with the flight software team to define the aircraft-to-ground interface, collaborate with electrical engineering on new hardware bring-up, and partner with the test organization on testing. The position calls for practical embedded firmware experience, hardware debugging skills, and ownership of firmware from initial boot through production.

Requirements

  • Strong embedded C, C++, or Rust experience in resource-constrained environments, including shipping firmware that runs on real hardware in the field.
  • Real-time firmware experience with interrupts, DMA, timing budgets, and debugging issues that appear under load.
  • Hands-on board bring-up and hardware debugging experience using tools such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
  • Working knowledge of embedded communication interfaces such as UART, SPI, I2C, USB, and Ethernet.
  • Track record of taking firmware from first boot to production with light direction.
  • Test discipline appropriate for firmware relied upon in the field.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with embedded Linux, including building services and device interfaces; exposure to Yocto or Buildroot.
  • Linux networking and integration of IP-based radio or datalink systems.
  • Experience with video pipelines on embedded hardware, including capture, decode, display, and latency.
  • RC radio or ground controller firmware experience, such as ExpressLRS, EdgeTX/OpenTX, or similar.
  • Experience moving a product from a microcontroller to an embedded Linux platform.
  • Experience flying FPV, RC aircraft, or drones generally.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain firmware for ground control hardware across microcontroller and embedded Linux targets.
  • Own operator input handling, the communication link to the aircraft, and ground-side telemetry and video reception.
  • Manage latency and reliability across the operator’s control path, from input to transmission.
  • Define the ground side of the aircraft-to-ground interface with the flight software team, including behavior when the link degrades.
  • Bring up and debug new ground hardware alongside electrical engineering.
  • Write unit and integration tests for firmware, partnering with the test organization on hardware-in-the-loop and field testing.

Benefits

  • Highly competitive equity grants are considered part of Neros’ total compensation package.
