Senior Fire Protection Engineer

Cynet Systems•Chandler, AZ

About The Position

The Senior Fire Protection Engineer plans, schedules, conducts, and coordinates detailed phases of mechanical engineering work within a project or staff group. The work follows conventional engineering practices but may involve complex design requirements, unsuitable conventional materials, or difficult coordination. The role uses Standard Application Programs (BSAPs) and may prepare equipment or work specifications, material requisitions, technical bid evaluations, and award recommendations. The engineer coordinates engineering efforts across specialties and disciplines and with clients, suppliers, contractors, and other groups. They take a lead technical role over engineers or project subgroups on assigned tasks, communicate complex technical issues and recommend solutions to supervisors or project management, and contribute to engineering procedures, design guides, standard computer applications, and administrative practices. The role also mentors designers and drafters through on-the-job training and supports a work environment that fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction. The position focuses on fire protection systems in semiconductor, AI datacenter, or life-sciences/pharma industries. It requires independent specification of fire protection systems and equipment, hydraulic and fire-water demand calculations, coordination of regulatory approvals, and experience with relevant NFPA standards and other mechanical-system codes. The engineer may also manage engineering subcontracts and troubleshoot issues in field or job-site settings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or international equivalent; the required discipline is mechanical engineering or equivalent from an accredited university or college.
  • At least 10 years of relevant work experience in semiconductor, AI datacenter, and/or life-sciences/pharma industries.
  • At least 10 years of work related to fire protection systems in semiconductor, AI datacenter, or life-sciences/pharma industries.
  • Ability to independently specify fire protection systems and select appropriate sprinkler systems and equipment, including fire-water pumps and storage tank capacities.
  • Ability to calculate fire-water demand and perform hydraulics to determine fire-water pipe header sizes.
  • Experience with wet-pipe systems under NFPA 13, standpipe and hose systems under NFPA 14, and FM standards.
  • Experience with fire-protection pumps, storage tanks, and deluge systems.
  • Experience with cooling-tower deluge-system sprinklers in accordance with NFPA 214.
  • Knowledge of fire-protection system testing requirements, including acceptance tests under NFPA 13, and compliance with local regulatory authorities, including AHJs.
  • Ability to coordinate regulatory approvals with owners, project teams, subcontractors, and relevant regulatory authorities.
  • Experience managing engineering subcontracts and delivering design work according to contract requirements.
  • Knowledge of codes and standards applicable to mechanical systems, including ASME, IBC, IMC, and NFPA.
  • Thorough knowledge of discipline engineering techniques, engineered-system design, and engineering and design calculations.
  • Thorough understanding of other departments’ roles on projects, including construction practices and related economics.
  • Ability to troubleshoot confidently in a field or job-site setting and instruct others on resolving identified issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage conflicting deadlines, frequent interruptions, and multiple tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of mechanical engineering work in a project or staff group.
  • Perform engineering work involving conventional practices and potentially complex design or coordination challenges.
  • Use Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).
  • Plan, coordinate, or prepare equipment and work specifications, material requisitions, technical bid evaluations, and award recommendations.
  • Coordinate engineering efforts across specialties, disciplines, clients, suppliers, contractors, and other groups.
  • Lead engineers or project subgroups technically on assigned tasks.
  • Communicate complex technical issues and recommend solutions to supervisors and/or project management.
  • Support development of Engineering Department Procedures, design guides, Standard Computer Applications, and administrative practices.
  • Mentor designers and drafters and provide on-the-job training.
  • Support a work environment that fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
  • Independently specify fire protection systems and select appropriate sprinkler systems and fire protection equipment based on project needs.
  • Calculate fire-water demand and perform hydraulic calculations to determine fire-water pipe header sizes.
  • Coordinate regulatory approvals with the owner, project team, subcontractors, and relevant authorities.
  • Manage engineering subcontracts to ensure design and delivery meet contract requirements.
  • Troubleshoot issues in field or job-site settings and provide instructions for resolving them.
  • Ensure fire-protection system testing and compliance with applicable standards and local regulatory authority requirements.
