Senior Fire Protection Engineer

Cynet Systems•Houston, TX

About The Position

The Senior Fire Protection Engineer plans, schedules, conducts, and coordinates detailed phases of mechanical engineering work on project or staff assignments. The role involves applying conventional engineering practices to work that may include complex design conflicts, unsuitable conventional materials, or difficult coordination requirements, using Standard Application Programs (BSAPs). The engineer prepares or coordinates equipment and work specifications, material requisitions, technical bid evaluations, and award recommendations. The position coordinates engineering work across specialties and disciplines and with clients, suppliers, contractors, and other groups. It assumes a lead technical role over engineers or project subgroups for assigned tasks, communicates complex issues and recommended solutions to supervisors or project management, and contributes to Engineering Department Procedures, design guides, standard computer applications, and administrative practices. The role also mentors designers and drafters and supports a work environment characterized by openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction. The position requires expertise designing fire-protection systems for semiconductor, AI datacenter, or life-sciences/pharma projects, including system selection, equipment specification, fire-water demand and hydraulic calculations, and coordination of regulatory approvals and testing. It also involves managing engineering subcontracts, applying relevant codes and standards, and troubleshooting issues in field or job-site settings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or international equivalent in mechanical engineering or an equivalent field from an accredited university or college.
  • At least 10 years of relevant work experience in the semiconductor, AI datacenter, and/or life-sciences/pharma industries.
  • At least 10 years of experience related to fire-protection systems in semiconductor, AI datacenter, or life-sciences/pharma industries.
  • Ability to independently specify fire-protection systems and select suitable sprinkler systems based on project needs.
  • Ability to specify fire-protection equipment, including fire-water pumps and fire-water storage tank capacities, to meet fire-water demand.
  • Ability to perform fire-water demand and hydraulic calculations and determine fire-water pipe header sizes.
  • Experience with wet-pipe systems under NFPA 13, standpipe and hose systems under NFPA 14, and FM standards.
  • Experience with fire-protection equipment such as pumps, storage tanks, and deluge systems.
  • Experience with cooling-tower deluge-system sprinklers in accordance with NFPA 214.
  • Knowledge of fire-protection system testing requirements, including acceptance tests under NFPA 13, and compliance with local regulatory authority and AHJ requirements.
  • Knowledge of codes and standards for mechanical-system design, including ASME, IBC, IMC, and NFPA.
  • Thorough knowledge of discipline engineering techniques, engineered-system design, and engineering and design calculations.
  • Thorough understanding of other departments' roles on projects, including construction practices and associated economics.
  • Ability to troubleshoot confidently in field or job-site settings and provide instructions to resolve issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage conflicting deadlines, frequent interruptions, and multiple tasks.
