About The Position

The Los Angeles County Fire Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Senior Equipment Maintenance Worker vacancies related to an unprecedented natural disaster. Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment. During your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance, with this assessment weighted 100%. Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Senior Equipment Maintenance Worker. This role involves performing complex maintenance and repair of equipment and tools used across various County departments, including recreational activities, parks and public works maintenance, engineering and surveying, hospitals and institutions, fueling facilities, custody facilities, institutional kitchens, and miscellaneous activities. Responsibilities include calibrating fuel gauges, requisitioning supplies, operating woodworking and metalworking equipment, fabricating special equipment, keeping work records, and ensuring the proper use of safety equipment. The role may also involve minor welding, leading patient helpers or public assistance recipients, performing building maintenance, and driving automotive equipment.

Requirements

Three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of a variety of equipment and tools.
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Some assignments require the use of respirators such as when working in confined spaces or in an environment with hazardous materials.

Responsibilities

Leads lower-level staff and performs the more complex maintenance and repair of equipment and tools used in recreational activities, parks and public works maintenance, engineering and surveying, hospitals and institutions, fueling facilities, custody facilities, institutional kitchens, and miscellaneous activities.
Calibrates fuel quantity gauges to measure fuel delivery.
Sets readings on computerized fuel monitoring systems such as Veeder-Root and Auto-Stik.
Requisitions materials and supplies.
Operates powered wood and metal working equipment such as lathes, mills, drills, and saws.
Fabricates special equipment and tools and may participate in their design.
Keeps work records and makes reports on repairs, repair orders, and other work-related information.
May prepare and generate reports.
Exercises utmost care in the performance of duties, and uses and/or provides guidance to lower-level staff on the proper use of safety equipment, protective devices, and special clothing.
May perform minor welding and blacksmith work.
May lead patient helpers or recipients of Public Assistance in equipment maintenance work.
May lead and participate in the more complex building maintenance and repair including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, kitchen maintenance, or other work in the building trades and general maintenance field.
May have immediate responsibility in a non-supervisory capacity for the maintenance and repair of a variety of complex and specialized equipment.
May lead and participate in performing minor adjustments to large capacity mail machine components to maintain workflow and accurate metering of mail and prevent/fix paper jams.
May drive automotive equipment and operate equipment including light trucks, power jacks, and forklifts in the performance of duties.
May oil and grease equipment in absence of helper.
May operate equipment during relief periods.
May perform product examination and analysis of equipment malfunctions or mechanical failure due to various causes.
May contact vendor to report machine malfunctions as necessary.
May occasionally work in confined spaces or in an environment with hazardous materials.
