About The Position

The City of Hanford is seeking to fill one (1) vacancy in the Public Works Department - Parks Division. This role involves organizing, assigning, and reviewing the work of staff engaged in construction, repair, and maintenance of parks, streets, and/or sewers and storm drains. It requires performing duties that demand specialized knowledge and providing administrative support to an assigned supervisor. This is the advanced journey level in the Maintenance Worker series, distinguished by a higher level of responsibility, complexity of duties, independence of action, time spent performing duties, and nature of public contact. Employees at this level perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties, including providing technical and functional supervision over assigned personnel and inspecting maintenance and repair work in progress. They are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to their assigned areas of responsibility.

Requirements

Principles and practices of technical and functional supervision and training.
Principles and practices of area of assignment, such as street maintenance (including signs, asphalt, crack sealing, and concrete repair); sewer and storm drain maintenance and repair; or parks maintenance.
Safe work practices.
Methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in area of assignment.
Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances.
Basic mathematical concepts.
Provide technical and functional supervision over assigned staff; effectively train staff.
Perform the most complex duties related to assigned maintenance functions.
On a continuous basis, know and understand maintenance activities and observe safety rules.
Intermittently, analyze problem equipment; identify safety hazards; locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember how to operate equipment; and explain jobs to other employees.
Intermittently, sit while driving a piece of equipment; stand and walk while performing maintenance activities; bend and twist to adjust equipment; kneel and squat to review work; climb up on to heavy equipment to test or inspect systems; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; lift or carry weight of 50 pounds or less, and occasionally exert in excess of 100 pounds of force.
Read and interpret plans and blueprints.
Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools.
Safely and efficiently operate heavy and medium equipment.
Use sound judgment in recognizing scope of authority.
Operate and use modern office equipment including computers and applicable software.
Maintain regular attendance and adhere to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities.
Utilize appropriate safety procedures and practices for assigned duties.
Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Relate effectively with people of varied academic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy.
Establish and maintain effective, cooperative, and collaborative working relationships with others.
Two years of responsible journey experience similar to Maintenance Worker II with the City of Hanford.
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a current, valid California Class C driver's license.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a California Class B driver's license with tanker and air brake endorsements within twelve months of appointment.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a fork lift certificate within twelve months of appointment.

Responsibilities

Plan, prioritize, and review the work of staff assigned to a variety of maintenance and repair functions.
Develop schedules and methods to accomplish assignments ensuring work is completed in a timely and efficient manner.
Participate in evaluating the activities of staff, recommending improvements and modifications; inspect maintenance and repair projects in progress; review and control quality of work.
Provide and coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies.
Order supplies and equipment for work projects.
Perform the most difficult work related to skilled maintenance, repair, and installation projects.
Operate, maintain, and repair a variety of hand and power tools.
Perform manual labor and/or operate heavy and medium equipment on a maintenance crew as needed.
Complete a variety of logs, documents, and reports related to maintenance projects.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.

Be an integral team player, which involves flexibility, cooperation, and communication.
When assigned to Parks: Apply herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides in a safe and effective manner; perform a variety of cement and asphalt work; renovate and maintain stream bed areas including maintenance of trails and installation of vegetation and erosion control devices.
