About The Position

Grafana Labs is hiring a Senior Engineering Manager to lead its Frontend Platform and Navigation squads. Grafana is an open-source observability product and a platform used by teams and plugin developers. The Frontend group shapes experiences such as dashboards, visualisation, navigation, search and sharing, as well as the foundations that support engineering teams and community contributors across the Grafana ecosystem. Frontend Platform enables teams to build reliable, high-quality experiences, while Navigation helps users find and organise resources and move through Grafana confidently. The role owns the performance, delivery and customer outcomes of two distributed engineering squads. The manager develops senior engineers, works with Product and Design, and improves how teams operate, including through AI and automation. Grafana Labs uses Cloud-first rollout and experimentation to learn quickly and bring relevant improvements to both OSS and Enterprise. The position participates in the engineering management on-call rota and uses Grafana’s AI capabilities for observability, incident investigation and management. This is a remote opportunity for applicants in the United States who are in EST time zones. Grafana Labs supports the use of modern AI coding assistants within security guidelines, with a company-funded usage budget and access to frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. The company describes itself as remote-only, open-source-rooted, globally collaborative and innovation-driven.

Requirements

  • Significant experience managing senior engineers, building healthy teams and developing technical leaders.
  • Ability to give clear feedback and address performance gaps directly and fairly.
  • Strong technical foundation in modern web or frontend systems, with the ability to evaluate trade-offs and shape architecture and engineering-quality decisions with senior engineers.
  • Track record of turning ambiguous, cross-team problems into clear priorities and measurable results while managing delivery risks and operational demands.
  • Strong product and customer judgement, connecting engineering investments to user, developer and business outcomes.
  • Clear, concise written communication and ability to work effectively in a remote, globally distributed organisation.
  • Appreciation for open-source development and judgement to balance Cloud-first delivery with the needs of customers, community members and internal teams.
  • Practical experience using AI and automation in leadership work and leading teams to adopt them effectively.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with React, TypeScript or comparable large-scale frontend ecosystems.
  • Experience leading a developer platform team, including support for plugins or extensions.
  • Experience with navigation, search, information architecture or resource-management products.
  • Experience delivering multitenant SaaS or major platform migrations.
  • Experience working on a widely adopted open-source product.

Responsibilities

  • Be accountable for the performance of two distributed engineering squads by setting expectations, delegating, coaching and developing team members, providing timely feedback, addressing performance gaps, and building trust and accountability.
  • Own hiring and team planning across both squads, aligning capacity and skills with product priorities and longer-term needs.
  • Lead discovery with squads by engaging customers, community members and internal users, combining feedback with research and usage evidence, and using insights to shape roadmaps and priorities.
  • Partner with Product, Design and engineering leaders to set priorities, resolve dependencies and make trade-offs among customer needs, long-term investments and operational demands.
  • Own delivery across both squads from discovery through rollout and measurement; set milestones, surface risks early and intervene when commitments are at risk.
  • Use AI in management work to synthesise research and feedback, inform roadmap and resourcing decisions, and streamline coordination, reporting and follow-through.
  • Improve squad planning, decision-making and delivery; lead adoption of AI and automation across engineering and operational workflows, evaluating their effects on delivery speed, quality and repetitive work.
  • Set engineering direction with senior engineers for frontend foundations, including developer experience, accessibility, architecture, tooling, reliability and multitenant capabilities.
  • Set engineering direction for navigation, search and resource organisation, including potential uses of AI-assisted discovery.
  • Set and uphold standards for engineering quality, security and operability, including evaluation and validation of AI-assisted work.
  • Lead improvements across Grafana and R&D that increase engineering productivity and improve business outcomes.
  • Participate in the engineering management on-call rota, coordinate responses and drive improvements that reduce recurring disruption.
  • Regularly use Grafana’s AI capabilities for observability, incident investigation and management, and incorporate that experience into product feedback and roadmap decisions.

Benefits

  • Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) for all roles.
  • Global annual leave policy of 30 days per annum, including 3 days reserved for Grafana Shutdown Days, subject to local legislation.
  • In-person onboarding.
  • Company-funded usage budget for AI coding assistants.
  • Access to frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.
