Senior Engineering Manager, Platform Engineering

SpyCloud•Austin, TX
•$150,000 - $195,000

About The Position

SpyCloud is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead its core platform team. Product engineering teams are stream-aligned and own parts of SpyCloud’s products end to end; they are the platform team’s customers. The platform team builds and operates the internal platform that enables those teams to focus on product work rather than infrastructure, pipelines, and tooling. This is both a product and engineering leadership role. The manager will treat the platform as a product, earn adoption rather than mandate it, and measure success by the cognitive load removed from the teams it serves. The role emphasizes collaboration, transparency, continuous improvement, and keeping work fun. The company’s technology stack includes Go, TypeScript, Python, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Databricks, ElasticSearch, DynamoDB, AWS, Docker, Terraform, and Linux.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of software engineering experience, including hands-on platform engineering work.
  • 3–5 years of experience leading engineering teams of four or more people, ideally in platform engineering, engineering, or developer tooling.
  • A track record of operating an internal platform as a product, including explaining its internal customers, decisions about what not to build, and changes in adoption and satisfaction.
  • Experience operating highly available systems in AWS, with working knowledge of containers, infrastructure as code (Terraform), CI/CD, and observability.
  • Strong technical judgment and a hands-on approach, including sound architectural and build-versus-buy decisions and willingness to work in code when needed.
  • Experience using DORA metrics, SLOs, and developer experience surveys to set priorities and communicate platform value.
  • Excellent communication and ability to influence without authority, including leading cross-team migrations with teams the candidate does not manage.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, hire, and grow a team of platform engineers, coaching them in product thinking and empathy for the developers they serve.
  • Own the platform vision and roadmap as a product, prioritizing through discovery with stream-aligned teams and clearly defining what the platform will not build.
  • Publish and maintain a team charter defining platform services, SLOs, the support model, and how teams engage with the platform team.
  • Measure success using DORA metrics, developer satisfaction, golden-path adoption, and self-service ratios, and use results to set priorities.
  • Operate the platform as a dependable product with SLOs, versioning, and on-call support.
  • Lead platform-wide migrations so the platform team carries the burden rather than individual product teams.
  • Evaluate, roll out, and measure AI-assisted development tools across engineering.

Benefits

  • 401(k) with employer contribution (U.S.).
  • Health, vision, and dental insurance (U.S.).
  • Health Savings Account available with employer contribution (U.S.).
  • Employer-paid life, short-term disability, and long-term disability insurance (U.S.).
  • Generous PTO plan and 16 paid holidays per year (U.S.).
  • Retirement savings plan with employer contribution (U.K.).
  • Employer-provided private health insurance and healthcare cash plan (U.K.).
  • Employer-paid life insurance, income replacement, and critical illness protection (U.K.).
  • Employee Assistance Program (U.K.).
  • 25 days of annual accrued holiday, 8 paid bank holidays, and a paid company shutdown during winter holidays (U.K.).
  • Flexible and remote-friendly work options.
