About The Position

Grafana Labs is a remote-first, open-source powerhouse with over 20 million users globally. We are scaling fast and are looking for an Engineering Manager to join the Grafana Backend team. Our managers actively create a thriving environment for engineers by removing blockers, facilitating collaboration, and improving working practices. You will be responsible for managing a team of distributed engineers working across various systems and helping them perform at their best. The Grafana Backend team's mission is to evolve the backend of the Grafana visualization product by architecting and delivering an exceptional Grafana core platform that supports our high-demand service. We aim to enable users and agents to leverage Grafana for observing infrastructure and software lifecycles efficiently. Our work primarily focuses on OSS Grafana, with close collaboration with customers of our commercial offerings. Our main goal is to deliver the application platform that will unlock multi-tenancy in Grafana to meet growing demand. We strive to deeply understand developers, both internal and external, and play an active role in research to deliver the best developer experience. Close collaboration with Product, Docs, and Customer Experience is expected.

Requirements

Strong software engineering background.
Capable of engaging in technical conversations.
Strong technical foundation is essential for success in the app platform area.
Ability to work with your team to set milestones, clearly communicate delivery timelines and help remove impediments.
Comfortable working with engineering teams who have a strong sense of autonomy in their decision making, be it technical or product focussed.
Keep up-to-date with the latest technical trends and shifts in order to maintain and enhance your understanding of the challenges your teams face.
We primarily work with Go on back-end development.

Responsibilities

Manage a team of distributed engineers working across a variety of systems and help them perform at their best.
Remove blockers and impediments for the team.
Facilitate cross-team collaboration and understanding.
Aid the team in improving and refining their working practices.
Architect and deliver an exceptional Grafana core platform.
Deliver on the application platform which will unlock multi-tenancy in Grafana.
Engage in technical conversations and challenge teams to arrive at strong technical decisions.
Set milestones, clearly communicate delivery timelines, and help remove impediments.
Work closely with stakeholders and product managers to ensure the product roadmap is defined and up-to-date.
Collaborate to ensure the product direction aligns with the company mission and define OKRs.
Focus on quality above speed of delivery while encouraging a short feedback cycle and experimentation.
Work with engineering teams who have a strong sense of autonomy in their decision making.
Keep up-to-date with the latest technical trends and shifts to maintain and enhance understanding of team challenges.
Coach, mentor, and advise direct reports.
Provide continuous feedback to engineers.
Gather a range of opinions from engineers and management to define upcoming features.
Contribute to design documents and attend/contribute to open discussions.
Reach out to URMs to diversify voices within Grafana.
Ensure features are well-defined and ready for development, and then ensure they are delivered.
Start up new initiatives, contribute to ongoing ones, and encourage and nurture others to do the same.
Work with the community and default to transparency.
