About The Position

Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. This role is an in‑office position based at our 20 Bay Street location. Our E&AM Electrification and Plant Office is looking for a Catenary and Contact Systems engineering expert who will be responsible for the asset class asset base for GO Heavy, LRT and Subways. Reporting to the Engineering Principal, Distribution, the successful candidate will manage risk-based assurance and audit programs and provide support on technical and risk matters for high capital value assets. The role is also responsible for the development and justification of business plans, budget development and reporting for SOGR programs for agency retained assets and oversight for outsourced contracts.

Requirements

  • Completion of a University Degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering and rail sector or related industry experience, or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience in OCS electrification and contact systems, or related, engineering disciplines or a combination of design, delivery, testing and commissioning, operations, and maintenance of comparable railway systems in a comparable role.
  • Proficient, with proved experience, in railway electrification to be able to serve as subject matter expert (SME) representative on OCS and contact systems.
  • Experience with OCS calculations for cantilever, head span, wind and ice loads, etc., as well as experience in finite element analysis.
  • Proficient in applicable industry and government standards respective to the asset class, including but not limited to knowledge of AREMA, CN, EN, CSA, NEC, IEEE and CENELEC.
  • Experience with design, construction, testing and commissioning, as well as operation and maintenance of OCS and traction power equipment.

  • P.Eng, designation or C.E.T. certification will be an asset

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the technical expert for Catenary and Contact Systems and provides oversight and direction to staff, contract, and project teams, including defining team member roles, responsibilities, and expectations.
  • Manages reviews and reporting on testing and commissioning plans, submittals, and activities for compliance with technical requirements, standards, and regulatory requirements, including for outsourced contracts, prior to acceptance testing and revenue service.
  • Collaborates closely with the agency departments and offices for safety and operations and the Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) for the asset class area of assigned responsibility.
  • Supports whole-life cost modeling development and analysis to realize long-term sustainability of the agency asset base working with other business units to translate asset strategies into the whole life cost model
  • Supports the Asset Class Lifecycle Strategy, the Asset Management Plan, and utilizes analysis results of operating and maintenance-based data to provide engineering recommendations to optimize asset performance and reliability requirements and forecasts for predictive or preventative maintenance initiatives and proposals.
