About The Position

Tectonic is seeking a full-time Senior Engineering Geologist / Tunnel Engineer for a field-based role supporting underground construction on a high-profile, multi-year design-build project in New York City. The successful candidate will map and evaluate rock faces after excavation and provide technical input on ground conditions, rock quality, stability, and temporary rock support. The project involves both TBM and drill-and-blast excavation methods. The initial assignment is expected to be long-term, and the overall project need is anticipated to continue for approximately 2–3 years. The position includes inspection and evaluation of underground construction such as tunnels, caverns, shafts, and adits; documentation of rock reinforcement and geotechnical activities; support for instrumentation and monitoring; review of project technical documents; and coordination with project engineers, contractors, construction personnel, and client representatives. The employee may provide technical leadership and oversight to additional field personnel as needed. This role involves regular work on a job site, including movement over varied terrain and ladders and occasional work in hazardous weather. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 31 pounds and may be required to undergo substance abuse testing under project requirements, US DOT regulations, or company policy.

  • Valid New York State Professional Geologist (P.G.) or Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
  • Extensive professional experience in underground construction, including tunnels, caverns, shafts, and/or similar underground structures.
  • Hands-on experience with rock face mapping and rock mass characterization and stability evaluation.
  • Experience with underground excavation support systems, including rock bolts, shotcrete, grouting, and related rock reinforcement methods.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, geologic information, and construction documents.
  • Strong technical writing and field documentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work effectively with contractors, engineers, clients, and other project stakeholders.

  • Inspect and evaluate underground construction involving tunnels, caverns, shafts, and adits.
  • Observe and document rock reinforcement, rock mass grouting, probe-hole drilling, permeability testing, and other geotechnical construction activities.
  • Support geotechnical instrumentation activities, including deformation and vibration monitoring.
  • Prepare daily field reports, geologic maps, rock mapping records, boring and probe-hole logs, and other project documentation.
  • Review applicable plans, specifications, drawings, construction procedures, and other technical documents.
  • Coordinate with project engineers, contractors, construction personnel, and client representatives regarding field conditions and construction activities.
  • Attend project and progress meetings as required.
