Resident Engineer, Tunnel Engineering SME | Hudson Tunnel Project
About The Position
The Resident Engineer, Tunnel Engineering SME will support delivery of the Hudson Tunnel Project, a major rail infrastructure project intended to improve capacity, reliability, and resiliency for commuter and intercity rail service. The role participates in and coordinates technical office and field engineering assignments, represents the Construction Management team in daily contractor meetings, and provides technical input to senior construction management staff. The position oversees review of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) design, fabrication, and operation, as well as the design, fabrication, delivery, and installation of precast concrete tunnel lining segments. It coordinates timely completion of tunneling works, monitors tunneling progress and ground and excavation conditions, reviews monitoring data, and supports safety, quality control, reporting, and troubleshooting. The role also coordinates with the Outreach Team and third-party stakeholders.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- Proven experience working with Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs).
- Tunneling experience, specifically with pressurized-face TBM mining, precast concrete segmental lining, and cross-passage construction.
- Excellent project management skills and ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams.
- Understanding of safety standards, regulations, and best practices in tunneling operations.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
Responsibilities
- Participate in the development, execution, supervision, and coordination of technical office and field engineering assignments, including reviewing plans, schedules, contracts, procedures, and construction methods.
- Represent the Construction Management team during daily construction meetings with the Contractor.
- Provide technical input to senior Construction Management staff.
- Oversee review of Tunnel Boring Machine design, fabrication, and operation during tunneling.
- Oversee review of detailed design, fabrication, delivery, and installation of precast concrete tunnel lining segments.
- Coordinate with the project team to ensure tunneling works are completed on time and according to project specifications.
- Monitor tunneling progress, ground conditions, and excavation parameters.
- Review geotechnical and structural monitoring data.
- Implement safety protocols and quality control measures to mitigate risks and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Prepare progress reports and documentation, including reports on TBM operations.
- Troubleshoot technical issues and provide solutions to challenges encountered during tunneling operations.
- Coordinate with the Outreach Team and third-party stakeholders.
