Senior Engineer II - Software Development (Ethernet APIs)

Microchip Technology Inc.•Hauppauge, NY
•$70,304 - $205,000

About The Position

Microchip Technology’s Network and Connectivity Solutions Group develops integrated Ethernet PHY, switch, and network interface controller products. The role is part of a global engineering organization, with teams in the United States, Denmark, India, Taiwan, and China. As a member of the software development team in Hauppauge, New York, or Austin, Texas, you will develop, integrate, and maintain Ethernet device drivers and supporting software for Microchip USB- and PCIe-based network interface devices. The work spans Linux, Windows, QNX, VxWorks, and other embedded or real-time platforms, with close collaboration across hardware, firmware, validation, applications, and customer-support teams. The position includes understanding the architecture, specifications, interfaces, and use cases of Microchip Ethernet NICs; designing, implementing, and maintaining drivers and tools; documenting development and support work; and helping customers integrate products by diagnosing and resolving system-level issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field, with 7.5 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Experience developing embedded software, device drivers, or low-level software for one or more operating systems, including Linux, QNX, Windows, macOS, or other operating systems and RTOS platforms.
  • Strong programming skills in C/C++ and working experience with Python.
  • Knowledge of processor architectures and operating-system internals, including concurrency, interrupts, DMA, memory management, and device I/O.
  • Ability to read board-level schematics, support hardware and driver bring-up, and debug systems using protocol analyzers, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to take ownership of complex technical work, collaborate across geographically distributed teams, and independently adapt plans as product requirements and priorities change.
  • Demonstrated employment stability, reliability, and sustained accountability in prior roles.
  • Effective teamwork and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Integrity and accuracy in representing qualifications, experience, and credentials.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing software for ARM or x86 platforms.
  • Knowledge of Ethernet, PCIe, USB, or other bus communication protocols.
  • Knowledge of PTP (Precision Time Protocol) and AVB (Audio Video Bridging).
  • Experience with AI-assisted engineering tools, including Claude Code.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a detailed understanding of Microchip USB- and PCIe-based Ethernet NIC architecture, specifications, interfaces, and use cases, and apply that knowledge to driver design, integration, debugging, and customer support.
  • Design, implement, and maintain Ethernet Network Controller device drivers and supporting tools for multiple operating systems.
  • Create design, development, and support documentation.
  • Support customer integration by reproducing system-level issues, analyzing driver, protocol, performance, and hardware interactions, identifying root causes, and delivering verified resolutions.

Benefits

  • Competitive base pay, restricted stock units, and quarterly bonus payments.
  • Health benefits beginning on day one.
  • Retirement savings plans.
  • Employee stock purchase plan (ESPP) with a two-year look-back feature.
