About The Position

Zimmer Biomet is a global medical technology leader. Our team members are part of a company with a heritage of leadership, a focus on shaping the future, and a mission dedicated to alleviating pain and improving the quality of life for people around the world. Ready to build the next generation of smart orthopedic solutions? As our Senior Engineer, you will drive the development of cutting-edge clinical tech—from surgical navigation and wearable sensors to intelligent implants and patient-specific planning. If you are a builder who thrives at the intersection of hardware, software, and medicine, this is your chance to own complex technical work and mentor a growing team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of relevant engineering experience, with demonstrated ownership of technical projects or subsystems; an advanced degree may offset a portion of industry experience where appropriate.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently while contributing to a collaborative, cross-functional environment.
  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, C++, or similar languages.
  • Experience independently developing and debugging algorithms for data processing, computational modeling, navigation, sensing, or systems control.
  • Experience applying ML/CV techniques to real-world problems.
  • Ability to select appropriate approaches, establish evaluation methods, and understand limitations and failure modes.
  • Experience with statistical modeling, data analysis, and performance evaluation.
  • Ability to work effectively with noisy, incomplete, experimental, or clinical datasets and draw defensible conclusions.
  • Experience developing within larger systems such as surgical navigation, sensors, wearables, robotics, imaging, or similar platforms.
  • Understanding of software/hardware interfaces, system-level tradeoffs, and clinical workflow integration.
  • Experience with requirements-based product development and technical documentation.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (MS/PhD) focused on Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Data Science, Robotics, Biomechanics, or related field preferred but not required.
  • Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, 3-Matic, Fusion 360, or similar) is beneficial.
  • Exposure to regulated medical-device development and design controls is preferred.
  • Experience in medical devices, imaging, or regulated environments.
  • Exposure to signal processing, biomechanics, sensor data, registration, or patient-specific modeling.
  • Ability to lead portions of complex projects independently while contributing to broader program success.
  • Experience mentoring or coaching less experienced engineers.
  • Strong technical communication and ability to influence decisions within a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead core phases of the development lifecycle for advanced surgical technologies.
  • Guide junior engineers and sync with cross-functional teams to bring ideas to life.
  • Take full ownership of complex software, hardware, and clinical engineering tasks.
  • Lead development efforts for key components or subsystems of Advanced Technologies programs, ensuring technical excellence and alignment with project objectives.
  • Define and refine system and subsystem requirements with emphasis on technical feasibility, data quality and availability, interfaces, and measurable performance criteria.
  • Independently develop and mature software, algorithms, computational models, and prototype systems from feasibility through increasingly product-relevant implementations.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Affairs, Product Development, Quality, Regulatory, Hardware, and other cross-functional teams in the design, testing, integration, and deployment of innovative technologies.
  • Develop and document test strategies and protocols, analyze results, identify root causes, and recommend design improvements.
  • Apply requirements-based development and appropriate design controls as technologies progress toward commercial medical products.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers through technical reviews, knowledge sharing, and day-to-day engineering guidance.
  • Support ongoing research and development initiatives by evaluating emerging technologies, identifying technical risks, and designing experiments to reduce uncertainty.
  • Manage multiple technical priorities with limited supervision and communicate risks, dependencies, and progress to project stakeholders.
  • Participate in surgical observations and clinical collaborations to translate workflow needs and clinical problems into meaningful technical solutions.

Benefits

  • Salary Range: $100,000 - $130,000 depending on skills and experience
