About The Position

Veregy is an award-winning NAESCO-Accredited decarbonization company focusing on accelerating and simplifying Energy Transition. We provide turnkey engineering and construction services designed to reduce our clients' energy and operating costs through the implementation of energy efficiency and infrastructure upgrades, smart building technology, fleet EV infrastructure, clean energy generation, and sustainability. The Senior Energy Engineer will support Veregy’s project development and energy-efficiency teams by providing technical leadership in energy modeling, savings calculations, guaranteed-savings risk assessment, M&V planning, and annual savings reporting. This individual will lead the modeling and determination of project energy savings and the preparation of M&V reports and IPMVP-compliant plans. The successful candidate must meet project development timelines, demonstrate creative problem-solving skills, and periodically serve in a client-facing role to present the engineering details of proposed and completed projects. This position will collaborate with the development team to identify, mitigate, and manage technical and financial risks. Following project completion, the Senior Energy Engineer will assist in quantifying and verifying energy and operational savings, as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, industrial, or architectural engineering, or a closely related field from a four-year college or university; or seven+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five to ten years of relevant energy-engineering experience, preferably supporting ESCO or performance-contracting projects required.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, scope, and calculate savings for energy conservation measures required.
  • Experience with weather-normalized regression models, interval data, and baseline development required.
  • Experience with industrial energy systems and processes required.
  • Experience with facility capacity planning and project leadership required.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required.
  • Knowledge of Veregy’s services and processes is required which can be obtained through intellect, technical inclination, and dedication to gain such knowledge.
  • Knowledge (Intermediate to advanced) of various operating systems, software products (e.g. MS Office, etc.), is required.
  • Knowledge and understanding of building energy systems, including HVAC, central plants, controls, lighting, domestic hot water, steam, building envelopes, water, and renewable-energy systems.
  • Knowledge of IPMVP and performance-contracting M&V practices.
  • Ability to identify calculation, implementation, and performance risks affecting guaranteed savings.
  • Ability to independently manage time, workload, and multiple concurrent assignments.
  • Ability to clearly explain complex engineering analyses to technical and nontechnical clients.
  • Ability to communicate safety-related issues to Veregy management.
  • Ability to respond effectively to inquiries and concerns from customers and staff.
  • Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret technical requirements and address both abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and tactfully negotiate competing priorities with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with development, operations, construction, commissioning, finance, and project-management teams.
  • Ability to review the work of other engineers and maintain consistent calculation and documentation standards.
  • Ability to work effectively under deadline pressure and work additional hours when necessary.
  • Ability and willingness to develop a thorough understanding of Veregy’s services, standards, and internal processes.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a U.S. Department of Energy Industrial Assessment Center program preferred.
  • Experience with eQuest, TRACE 3D Plus, HAP, or comparable building-energy modeling software preferred.
  • Experience with EnergyCAP, ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, or similar energy-management platforms preferred.
  • Familiarity with Python, R, Power BI, or similar analytical tools is beneficial but not required.
  • A Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the energy-engineering function, including the development and review of energy-savings models.
  • Works with Operations to evaluate the effects of proposed energy conservation measures (ECMs) on buildings and related HVAC, lighting, water, controls, and other facility systems.
  • Collaborates with the development team to create energy models that support accurate and sustainable savings.
  • Applies a strong understanding of energy conservation measures involving HVAC systems, chillers, lighting, building envelopes, domestic hot water, steam, controls, water systems, and similar building systems.
  • Evaluates the physical limitations, system interactions, and measurement boundaries associated with proposed ECMs.
  • Develops and validates energy and operational baselines.
  • Analyzes utility bills and interval data.
  • Performs weather normalization and regression modeling.
  • Evaluates interactive effects among ECMs.
  • Reviews savings calculations and provides technical quality control.
  • Develops contractual savings schedules.
  • Evaluates stipulated savings and measured savings.
  • Identifies and documents material changes affecting project performance.
  • Coordinates with commissioning, construction, and operations personnel.
  • Prepares annual M&V reports and savings reconciliations.
  • Works with the project development organization to educate clients regarding projected and realized energy savings and, where appropriate, operational savings.
  • Collaborates with the development team to establish effective risk-mitigation practices for the guaranteed-savings aspects of projects.
  • Leads the internal regional M&V team in quantifying savings as contractually defined.
  • Develops IPMVP-compliant M&V plans using Options A, B, C, and D, as appropriate, including measurement boundaries, metering requirements, sampling methodologies, uncertainty analysis, and routine and non-routine adjustments.
  • Reviews M&V data, calculations, and reports to confirm compliance with contractual requirements and company standards.
  • Supports the resolution of savings shortfalls, baseline issues, and other M&V-related concerns.
