Senior Energy Engineer- Tiered Sign-On Bonus up to $5,000
About The Position
Wake County General Services Administration (GSA) is seeking a Senior Energy Engineer to provide professional guidance and leadership in energy management, and to improve and maintain a variety of facilities. This role involves analyzing and presenting data, making repairs and improvements in energy efficiency across the building portfolio, and serving as a Project Manager for energy projects. GSA's portfolio includes nearly 200 buildings, totaling over 5 million square feet, ranging from new construction to historic high-rises. The facilities include courthouses, EMS stations, libraries, health centers, and detention centers. The position is responsible for specializing in Mechanical & Electrical projects such as HVAC controls, LED Lighting, retro commissioning, and solar PV and EV charging projects. This role assists in energy analysis and long-term planning for the entire building portfolio to reduce utility and operating costs and support County strategic goals. The Senior Energy Engineer will also be responsible for energy management of Wake County facilities, serve as staff to the Wake County Energy Advisory Commission along with the Physical Plant Director, and work closely with Facilities Design & Construction to ensure sustainable and maintainable building practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facility Management or related field
- Five years of job related experience
- A valid driver's license and a "safe" driving record
- Equivalent education and experience are accepted
- Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems and general construction principals and processes
- Knowledge and experience in HVAC controls and building commissioning
- Proven ability to estimate, budget, plan, organize and prioritize a large portfolio of projects
- Strong troubleshooting skill including the ability to take data from multiple sources to identify the point of failure
- Knowledge of workplace safety practices and PPE to conform with OSHA requirements
Nice To Haves
- Project management related certification (PMP)
- CEM or PEM Certification
- Eight years of experience in engineering or architecture related field
- Five years or more experience in managing projects
- North Carolina Professional Engineering License or Architecture Registration
- Firm grasp of mechanical, electrical and plumbing operations along with general construction knowledge
- Two years direct experience with Building Management Systems/Building Automation Systems or Building Commissioning
- Passion for reducing energy consumption and cost in commercial facilities
- Ability to identify problems, determine possible solutions and actively work to resolve the issues with sound judgement
- Strong project management skills including the ability to work with multiple disciplines to complete a project
- Ability to read and interpret construction documents
- Strong interpersonal skills ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with others
- Ability to interact and communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization with tact and diplomacy
- Excellent computer skills including the ability to manipulate large databases and extract relevant information
- Ability to firmly adhere to codes of conduct and ethical principles and set a good example for team members
Responsibilities
- Keeps Wake County facilities, its building systems and related equipment operating as consistently and efficiently as possible-this includes assisting Trades Supervisors with troubleshooting system failures and ensuring that buildings are code compliant and meet all regulatory requirements
- Function as or work collaboratively with Project Managers on establishing the scope, budget, design, schedule and implementation of the project
- Analyze a range of data inputs including utility data and building system information to identify meaningful trends that will assist in decision-making processes and interpret diagnostics on system operations in order to maintain the integrity of core building systems
- Craft and deliver detailed presentations on energy concepts for a broad range of audiences
- Offer guidance to all related Trades groups based on strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems and general construction principals and processes
- Assist in the planning of CIP projects in the Energy Conservation Measure CIP- this position will work with the trade groups to ensure that technology implemented and considered has a defined maintenance plan
- Specialize in Mechanical & Electrical projects such as HVAC controls, LED Lighting, retro commissioning and solar PV and EV charging projects
- Assist in energy analysis and long-term planning for the entire building portfolio to reduce utility and operating costs and make progress on County strategic goals and resolutions
- Provide guidance to Trades Supervisors in problem solving, modernizing systems, or coordinating resources among each trade discipline especially related to optimizing facility energy use
- Manage energy management of Wake County facilities
- Serve as staff to the Wake County Energy Advisory Commission along with the Physical Plant Director
- Work closely with Facilities Design & Construction to ensure that buildings are built in a sustainable and maintainable manner
