Senior Electrical Engineer — Safety & Systems Integration (On-site)

Standard Bots•Boston, MA
•$150,000 - $195,000•Onsite

About The Position

Standard Bots is hiring two Senior Electrical Engineers to develop electronics for Bolt, its mobile manipulation platform, which combines an autonomous mobile base with robot arms. One engineer will focus on the safety system, including its safety controller, dual-channel I/O, emergency stop and safety-rated power cutoff, safety scanners, encoders, and certification evidence. The other will focus on upper/lower system integration, including the electrical architecture connecting the arms, base, and control box through harnesses, connectors, communication buses, and bridging boards. Both roles take designs from concept through production release and involve hands-on work in the lab and on the robot. This is an on-site position at Standard Bots’ Boston-area office, where Bolt is designed, built, and tested. There is some flexibility on office days once the employee is up to speed. The office includes an electronics lab, test floor, and production robots. The expected work balance is roughly 60% design and 40% lab, integration, and manufacturing support. A robotics background is not required; the company values deep, hands-on electronics experience, particularly from industrial automation, machinery safety, automotive, or aerospace. The role involves designing and validating PCB assemblies and electrical subsystems, performing schematic capture and PCB layout, bringing up boards, writing test plans, debugging root causes, leading design reviews, contributing to component libraries and release processes, coordinating with PCB and harness vendors, and mentoring associate and mid-level engineers. Depending on focus, the engineer will develop safety architectures and certification evidence or own system electrical integration and prototype bring-up. The base salary range is $150,000 to $195,000, depending on experience. Full-time employees are eligible for employee stock options. Benefits include paid time off, medical, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, and a 401(k).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • At least 5 years designing, building, and testing PCBAs and electrical systems, including designs taken through production release.
  • Strong digital electronics knowledge, including MCUs, Ethernet, SPI, I2C, and UART.
  • Experience with analog and sensing, power sequencing and protection, and system-level grounding and EMC.
  • Deep expertise in either safety-rated design (such as ISO 13849, IEC 62061, or IEC 61508, including redundant architectures, diagnostics, STO, or safety fieldbus) or system integration (including harness and connector design, bus topology, and multi-board system bring-up).
  • Proficiency with Altium Designer for schematic capture and multilayer PCB layout.
  • Proficiency using oscilloscopes, logic/protocol analyzers, and bench instruments for debugging.
  • Ability to document findings and quickly converge on fixes.
  • Clear design documentation, trade studies, and design review communication.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-moving team with changing requirements and tight timelines.
  • Focus on reliable, manufacturable designs that can be released and shipped.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with harness tooling such as Altium Harness, Rapid Harness, or similar.
  • Mobile robot safety experience, including ISO 3691-4 / ANSI R15.08, safety laser scanners, and safe speed and field switching.
  • AMR navigation and localization hardware experience, including lidar and camera integration, IMU and wheel odometry, RTK-GNSS, or indoor RTLS such as UWB.
  • Experience with real-time industrial fieldbuses such as EtherCAT, CAN/CANopen, EtherNet/IP, or CIP Safety / FSoE.
  • Motor control and encoder interface experience.
  • Battery and high-current power distribution experience.
  • EMC/EMI design and compliance testing experience, including CE/UL or IEC 61000 series.
  • Experience taking products from prototype through NPI to volume manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Own the design and validation of PCBAs and electrical subsystems in the chosen focus area from concept through production release.
  • For the safety focus, design the functional safety architecture, including a safety PLC or controller, dual-channel inputs and outputs, STO and safe power cutoff, safety laser scanners, and safety-rated encoders; produce design evidence for ISO 13849 PL d / Cat 3 certification.
  • For the integration focus, own system electrical architecture, including harness and connector design, bus topology, and power and signal distribution between arms, base, and control box; lead integrated prototype bring-up.
  • Perform hands-on schematic capture, PCB layout, board bring-up, test planning, and root-cause debugging.
  • Lead design reviews and contribute to the component library and release process.
  • Serve as a technical contact for PCB and harness vendors.
  • Mentor associate and mid-level engineers.
  • Support lab work, integration, and manufacturing, with an expected allocation of roughly 40% of time to these activities.

  • Paid time off
  • Medical insurance
  • Dental insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Disability insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Employee stock options for full-time employees
