About The Position

The Senior Electrical Engineer, Motors & Power Systems will own and develop the engineering lifecycle for electric motors, integrated air handling machines, engine starters, generators, and alternators used in Thermo King sustainable transport refrigeration systems. This subject-matter-expert role bridges technology and real-world application, partnering with global suppliers as the primary technical contact and collaborating with cross-functional product development teams on electrical architectures. The engineer will also mentor team members and help advance the team's expertise. The role is onsite Monday through Thursday, with a choice of work location on Fridays based on work needs. Occasional domestic and international travel is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering field.
  • At least 5 years of engineering experience with electrical machines.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical discussions with suppliers and internal cross-functional teams.
  • Experience integrating electric machines into larger electromechanical systems and product architectures.
  • Knowledge of operating principles of motors, generators, and alternators, including induction machines, permanent magnet synchronous machines, synchronous reluctance machines, brushed DC machines, wound rotor alternators, and electronically commutated DC motors.
  • Understanding of electrical-machine electrical, mechanical, and thermal performance, including voltage, current, power factor, harmonic distortion, torque, speed, power, and temperature rise.
  • Knowledge of electrical-machine manufacturing processes, including laminations, winding, varnishing and encapsulation, casting, and general machining.
  • Understanding of bearings, bearing arrangements, lubrication, and bearing life.
  • Understanding of environmental aging and related protections, including ingress protection, coatings, paint, varnish, encapsulation, and material selection.
  • Understanding of interactions between electrical machines and power-electronics converters, including related machine-design precautions.
  • Knowledge of electrical-machine failure modes and their mitigation.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and objectively verbally, visually, and in writing, with appropriate detail for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Technical curiosity and enthusiasm for learning and developing new skills.
  • Ability to use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for technical documentation, analysis, and presentations.

Responsibilities

  • Own and continuously develop standards, regulations, specifications, and requirements that ensure the long-term reliability of electric machines, including electrical and mechanical aspects.
  • Work with applications engineers to understand product use cases and define associated needs and requirements using systems engineering methodology.
  • Collaborate with product development teams to propose and review electrical architectures and develop detailed performance specifications for the electrical machines involved.
  • Ensure compatibility between electrical machines and associated control and protection components, including inverters, contactors, fuses, and thermal protection devices.
  • Oversee electric-machine testing and validation by requesting tests and analyzing results internally or with suppliers.
  • Serve as the technical contact point with suppliers.
  • Support decision-making with clear comparisons and representations of technical merit.
  • Provide technical expertise for quality-improvement and cost-reduction campaigns.
  • Mentor team members on electric-machine operation, technologies, and construction.
  • Travel occasionally, both domestically and internationally.

Benefits

  • Health insurance and holistic wellness programs with incentives, effective from day one for the employee and family.
  • Fertility coverage and adoption/surrogacy assistance.
  • Up to 15 vacation days, paid holidays, sick leave, and additional options supporting volunteer and parental leave.
