About The Position

The Senior Electrical Engineer is a subject-matter expert responsible for the engineering lifecycle of electric motors, integrated air handling machines, engine starters, generators, and alternators used in Thermo King sustainable transport refrigeration systems. The role bridges technology and practical application by working with global suppliers as a primary technical contact, collaborating with cross-functional product development teams on electrical architectures, and mentoring other engineers. The engineer develops standards, regulations, specifications, and requirements for electric-machine reliability; supports applications engineers in defining product needs; reviews electrical architectures and creates performance specifications; and ensures compatibility between electrical machines and control and protection components. The role also oversees testing and validation, supports technical decision-making, quality improvement, and cost reduction, and includes occasional domestic and international travel. The position is onsite Monday through Thursday, with the employee able to choose their work location on Fridays based on work requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering field.
  • At least 5 years of engineering experience with electrical machines.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical discussions with suppliers and internal cross-functional teams.
  • Experience integrating electric machines into larger electromechanical systems and product architectures.
  • Knowledge of operating principles of motors, generators, and alternators, including induction machines, permanent magnet synchronous machines, synchronous reluctance machines, brushed DC machines, wound rotor alternators, and electronically commutated DC motors.
  • Understanding of electrical-machine electrical, mechanical, and thermal performance, including voltage, current, power factor, harmonic distortion, torque, speed, power, and temperature rise.
  • Knowledge of electrical-machine manufacturing processes, including laminations, winding, varnishing and encapsulation, casting, and general machining.
  • Understanding of bearings, bearing arrangements, lubrication, and bearing life.
  • Understanding of environmental aging and protective measures, including ingress protection, coatings, paint, varnish, encapsulation, and material selection.
  • Understanding of interactions between electrical machines and power-electronics converters, including related design precautions.
  • Knowledge of electrical-machine failure modes and their mitigation.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and objectively verbally, visually, and in writing, with appropriate detail for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Technical curiosity and enthusiasm for learning and developing new skills.
  • Ability to use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for technical documentation, analysis, and presentations.

Responsibilities

  • Own and continuously develop standards, regulations, specifications, and requirements to ensure the long-term reliability of electric machines, covering both electrical and mechanical aspects.
  • Work with applications engineers to understand product use cases and support the definition of needs and requirements using systems engineering methodology.
  • Collaborate with product development teams, propose and review electrical architectures, and develop detailed performance specifications for the electrical machines used in those architectures.
  • Ensure compatibility between electrical machines and associated control and protection components, including inverters, contactors, fuses, and thermal protection devices.
  • Oversee electric-machine testing and validation by requesting tests and analyzing results, internally or with suppliers.
  • Serve as the technical contact point with suppliers.
  • Support decision-making through clear comparisons and presentations of technical merit.
  • Provide technical expertise for quality improvement and cost reduction campaigns.
  • Mentor team members on electric-machine operation, technologies, and construction.
  • Travel occasionally, domestically and internationally.

Benefits

  • Health insurance and holistic wellness programs with incentives, available from day one.
  • Fertility coverage and adoption/surrogacy assistance.
  • Up to 15 vacation days, paid holidays, sick leave, and additional options supporting volunteer and parental leave.
  • 401(k) matching.
  • Educational and training opportunities through company programs.
