Sr Electrical Engineer

Blue Origin•Southgate, WA

About The Position

This role is part of Blue Origin’s Engines business unit, focused on the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. The Senior Electrical Engineer joins a small, high-impact team responsible for electrical design and definition supporting integration, installation, refurbishment, maintenance, and operations. The role delivers end-to-end electrical engineering solutions across motor systems, instrumentation, controls, and interconnected systems. Working independently, the engineer develops advanced solutions to complex problems, serves as the prime technical contact for electrical scope requiring coordination across organizations, and provides technical leadership and mentorship. The position holds electrical technical approval authority for its scope and drives processes, standards, and best practices for successful integration efforts. Relocation is provided, and travel is expected up to 25% of the time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • At least 8 years of relevant electrical engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated ownership of electrical design and integration through the full lifecycle without oversight.
  • Experience with low-voltage and medium-voltage systems, including performing, specifying, and adjudicating analyses and studies such as load flow, short circuit, coordination, and arc flash.
  • Experience designing and commissioning instrumentation and controls, including hardware such as Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
  • Demonstrated experience leading root-cause investigations of complex electrical or electromechanical failures and driving corrective actions to closure.
  • Hands-on experience with preventative and corrective maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of relevant codes and standards, such as NEC and NFPA 70E, and of LOTO and de-energization practices.
  • Demonstrated experience working in dynamic, high-energy operational environments.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and/or technicians and reviewing others’ technical work.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and graphical communication skills, including presenting technical rationale and risk trade-offs to senior leaders.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Proficiency using AI tools in an engineering workflow.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience designing for and approving work in hazardous (classified) areas, such as Class I, Division 2.
  • Experience leading formal failure investigation teams.
  • Experience developing or owning systems engineering, configuration management, or quality processes.
  • Experience authoring work instructions and developing or deploying new processes at the team or department level.
  • Experience architecting industrial or controls networking systems.
  • Deep experience with PLC/controls platforms and SCADA/HMI.
  • Experience serving as prime technical interface to external entities.

Responsibilities

  • Own the design, analysis, and implementation of electrical engineering solutions across motor systems, instrumentation, and controls, including architecture and requirements decomposition across integrated systems.
  • Lead electrical scope on a small team, determining methods and procedures for new assignments and making trade-offs among low-, medium-, and high-performance architecture choices.
  • Serve as the prime technical contact with operations, manufacturing, test, facilities, safety, external partners, and suppliers to negotiate requirements, set technical direction, and align on solutions.
  • Review others’ technical work, identify subtle flaws, improve designs, and mentor and train engineers and technicians on design-release and turnover techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Lead anomaly investigations, failure investigations, and root-cause analyses of complex electrical and electromechanical failures; develop and execute recovery and corrective-action plans.
  • Provide senior engineering leadership across supporting disciplines, including safety and failure-effects analysis, systems engineering, configuration management, quality, work-instruction authoring, work scheduling, technical design and drafting, and process development.
  • Contribute to and be accountable for schedule, budget, and milestones for assigned electrical scope; identify and communicate technical, cost, and schedule risks to senior program and technical leaders.
  • Own process and standards improvements and lead tool development to improve efficiency and reduce errors in electrical design, installation, and verification.
  • Own preventative and corrective maintenance strategies for electrical systems, including obsolescence planning and identification and procurement of critical spare parts.
  • Architect, configure, and support networking infrastructure for controls and instrumentation.
  • Set and enforce safe-work practices in design and execution, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), de-energization, and arc-flash and energized-work controls.
  • Design, evaluate, and approve electrical systems for installation in hazardous (classified) locations.
  • Champion and deploy AI-enabled engineering tools to improve team analysis, documentation, and design efficiency.
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives, technology maturation, and capture of best practices at the business and functional levels.
  • Document designs, analyses, and decisions to support traceability and configuration control.
