Senior Electrical Engineer

Ultima Genomics•Fremont, CA
•$135,000 - $155,000•Onsite

About The Position

Ultima Genomics is seeking a highly motivated Senior Electrical Engineer to help develop next-generation sequencing technology. The role owns the electrical architecture and technical execution of complex subsystems in automated sequencing instruments, guiding electronic designs from concept through production across robotics, precision motion control, high-speed data acquisition, mixed-signal electronics, and test automation. The engineer evaluates tradeoffs involving performance, reliability, manufacturability, cost, and schedule. The position translates system requirements into electrical specifications, defines subsystem interfaces and acceptance criteria, leads electrical design reviews and risk assessments, and supports safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and regulatory compliance activities. It designs custom PCBs and wire harnesses, defines and executes verification plans, leads prototype testing, and owns electrical readiness for product integration and transition to volume production. The engineer also develops automated test and measurement systems, troubleshoots electrical issues, creates build and test documentation, maintains design records and bills of materials, and manages component obsolescence and alternate-part qualification. This is a full-time onsite position at the company's Fremont, California location.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Hands-on experience designing custom PCBs and mixed-signal electronics with embedded microcontrollers.
  • Experience collaborating with firmware engineers on hardware-software integration and with mechanical and other engineering teams on design integration.
  • Strong understanding of signal and power integrity.
  • Proficiency with electronic design tools such as Altium Designer or KiCad for schematic capture and PCB layout creation and review.
  • Experience using circuit-simulation tools such as SPICE.
  • Experience designing industrial electrical systems, including power-supply sizing, component selection, wire-harness design, and electrical enclosure or panel layout.
  • Knowledge of EMI/EMC mitigation techniques, including grounding, shielding, filtering, and selecting appropriate harness and interconnect components.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for board-level electronics and complex multidisciplinary systems, with hands-on proficiency using bench and portable measurement equipment.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Python for test automation and data analysis.
  • Experience designing automated test platforms or reliability test setups.

Responsibilities

  • Own electrical architecture and technical execution for complex subsystems in next-generation automated sequencing instruments.
  • Guide electronic designs from concept through production across robotics, precision motion control, high-speed data acquisition, mixed-signal electronics, and test automation.
  • Translate system requirements into electrical specifications and define subsystem interfaces and acceptance criteria.
  • Lead electrical design reviews and risk assessments, document technical decisions and risk mitigations, and support safety, EMC, and regulatory compliance activities.
