Senior Electrical Engineer, RF PCB Specialist

HRL Laboratories•Calabasas, CA
•$140,700 - $175,950

About The Position

HRL Laboratories is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer specializing in RF PCB development to contribute technical expertise to a fast-paced team of scientists and engineers developing next-generation RF/mmWave subsystems. The role takes responsibility for the design, implementation, and testing of high-performance electrical and RF subsystems, using commercial, custom, and novel mixed-signal technologies. The engineer will perform preliminary and critical designs, oversee fabrication and testing, and develop schematics, PCB layouts, fabrication documentation, and assembled modules. The role also collaborates with Mechanical Engineering on thermal solutions and mechanical considerations, and mentors junior engineers while promoting development best practices. The position requires U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance; an active clearance is a plus. Travel of 20% is expected.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Electrical Engineering or a relevant field.
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience designing, implementing, and testing electronic circuits.
  • Extensive experience with schematic capture and PCB layout.
  • Proficiency in simulating electronics using software such as HFSS, ADS, or similar.
  • Expertise in RF and mmWave PCB development, layout, and testing.
  • Experience with Altium Designer.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.
  • Ability to use computers, engineering workstations, and complex electronic equipment; communicate orally and in writing; interact with vendors and colleagues; and work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to work well both in a team and independently.
  • Ability and willingness to travel 20% of the time.

Nice To Haves

  • In-depth knowledge of electronic subassemblies from component to subsystem level, including operation, controls, and safety.
  • Strong familiarity with the characteristics and trade-offs of current active and passive components and the availability of COTS components.
  • Advanced understanding of RF components and devices.
  • Expertise in conventional and advanced microelectronic packaging and integration, and thermal management.
  • Proficiency with digital, mixed-signal, power, and signal integrity tools.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of PCB manufacturing standards, including IPC 6012, IPC-A-610, and drill tolerancing.
  • Proven track record designing and qualifying hardware for military applications.
  • Active security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preliminary and critical designs using COTS or custom active and passive components with minimal oversight.
  • Oversee fabrication and testing processes, ensuring adherence to project timelines and quality standards.
  • Conduct schematic capture, PCB layout, fabrication documentation, and module assembly.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Engineering to develop thermal solutions and address mechanical design considerations.
  • Mentor junior engineers and set and encourage development best practices.
