About The Position

Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs, the Senior Director of Student Conduct is responsible for leading and overseeing all functions and strategic planning for the university-wide Office of Student Conduct. This office manages the student conduct system and educates students about community standards across all Johns Hopkins University schools and divisions. The role involves leading innovative strategic planning initiatives, including conflict resolution and restorative practices, supported by a comprehensive assessment plan for data-driven decision-making. This position administers the university-wide student conduct system for all students and student organizational/group non-academic misconduct under the Student Conduct Code, as well as academic violations for Advanced Academic Programs graduate and Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and Whiting School of Education undergraduate students. Additionally, the Senior Director provides oversight for student resolution processes related to the university-wide Sexual Misconduct Policy and Procedures (SMPP) and the Discrimination and Harassment Policy and Procedures (DHPP). The Senior Director directly and indirectly supervises a team of student conduct educators focused on student development and education, ensuring prompt, fair, and impartial investigations and resolutions that balance individual student interests with those of the university community, fostering academic achievement, community responsibility, and harm reduction. The role requires close collaboration with various university offices, including Vice Deans for Undergraduate Education and Advanced Academic Programs, Residential Life, Fraternity and Sorority Life, and university-wide student affairs offices. A strong working knowledge of Student Conduct, Academic Integrity, Clery, conflict resolution, restorative practices, Title IX, Title VI, and Hazing laws and education is essential, along with staying current on relevant local, regional, and national laws/mandates. The Senior Director represents Student Conduct and the Office of the Vice Provost of Student Affairs with professionalism and confidentiality, interacting with a wide range of constituencies including faculty, staff, high-level administrators, and community partners.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree.
  • Seven years of related experience.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with a broad range of people in a variety of sometimes highly charged situations.
  • Confidentiality, political savvy, tact, and a high level of administrative and communications skills required.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of college student development.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise discretion and mature judgment and manage multiple priorities at once with a very unpredictable daily routine.

  • Knowledge and experience in working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work in complex decentralized processes.

Responsibilities

  • Oversight for university-wide student conduct processes on and off campus, including those occurring in university residences and recognized student organizations.
  • Leads and provides oversight for highly complex, sensitive cases, requiring daily interaction and coordination with students, their families, Public Safety, JHPD, legal counsel, external law enforcement personnel, faculty, staff, and senior administrators.
  • Oversees and conducts administrative hearings for students or student groups who are referred for ethics and Student Conduct Code violations.
  • Leads and provides oversight for the development and implementation of educational and training programs for faculty and staff, investigators, adjudicators, and for various student groups and organizations on university policies, student rights and responsibilities, and student conduct processes.
  • Oversees and conducts informational & investigative processes for students or student groups for potential Student Conduct Code violations.
  • Leads and provides oversight for conflict resolution and restorative practices initiatives.
  • Produces reports, proposals and assessments, including but not limited to progress reports, annual reports and other requested data related to the Student Conduct system.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervise, and evaluates the professional team for Student Conduct.
  • Oversight for the creation, release, maintenance, and archiving of student disciplinary records in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and applicable University policies.
  • Strategic oversight for recruitment efforts, selection process, and training of the Student Conduct Board and Undergraduate Academic Ethics Board.
  • Leads planning and facilitation of training opportunities for all students, faculty and staff, including Student Conduct Board, Residential Life, and Student Affairs staff, who administer student conduct cases or assist with the process in an advisory capacity.
  • Oversight for the selection and training conduct boards to adjudicate student organization/student group cases.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of university policies, current state/federal laws related to student conduct including FERPA, Title VI, Title IX, VAWA, and maintains and provides statistics required for Clery Act and other mandated reporting.
  • Ensures accurate, consistent correspondence is produced pertaining to student investigations, conduct cases and ethics violations.
  • Establishes and maintains effective partnerships with key stakeholders, including but not limited to Public Safety, Office of Institutional Equity, Residential Life, Office of General Counsel, Athletics, Baltimore Police Department, Student Health & Well-Being, and other key student-facing staff.
  • Represents Student Conduct and Student Affairs on university and divisional committees, task forces, and projects.
  • Conducts benchmarking, outreach, policy development, and other special projects as assigned.
  • Leads the annual student conduct policy revision process.
  • Ensures strategic and compliance oversight for database management (Maxient system) and maintains files on all disciplinary cases.
  • Budget management and planning for the student conduct and academic integrity functions.
