Senior Director, Portfolio Creative & Design

Dollar Shave ClubDurham, NC
$210,000 - $235,000Hybrid

About The Position

Dollar Shave Club (DSC) is seeking a Sr. Portfolio Director, Creative & Design to lead all brand creative across its portfolio, which includes two distinct brands: DSC and Truly. DSC targets value-seeking, performance-first shoppers, while Truly appeals to the experiential, community-led beauty consumer. The role requires maintaining the distinct identities of both brands while identifying synergies in design, packaging, and work processes. The successful candidate will lead two creative teams and the brand voice function, reporting directly to the Chief Brand & Innovation Officer. This is a leadership role that still involves hands-on concepting, with a primary focus on direction, judgment, and maintaining high standards with restraint. The teams operate in a fast-paced, scrappy environment, producing most content in-house. The goal is to elevate the quality of work without slowing down production or creating a uniform brand appearance.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of creative experience.
  • 3+ years of experience leading creative leaders (Creative Directors or Associate Creative Directors reporting directly).
  • A portfolio demonstrating range across brands and voices, not a single signature style.
  • Experience leading creative for multiple brands or distinct audiences concurrently.
  • Strong concepting abilities, with a track record of generating ideas as well as judging them.
  • Demonstrated ownership of brand voice and design systems across various channels.
  • Hands-on experience with packaging and structural design, including portfolio architecture and retail shelf considerations.
  • Experience with both brand and performance creative, and comfort with the demands of social-first channels.
  • Background in beauty, personal care, grooming, or comparable consumer categories is strongly preferred; experience with both male- and female-skewed brands is a significant advantage.
  • A blend of agency and in-house experience is ideal.
  • Fluency with AI-enabled creative tools and a clear perspective on their effective use.
  • Proven ability to improve quality within a fast-paced, resource-constrained team without adding bureaucracy; a track record of protecting team culture rather than standardizing it.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, capable of persuading executives, retailers, and skeptics.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, integration projects, and a portfolio that is still evolving.

Responsibilities

  • Set and drive strategic creative direction across both brands, including ideas, standards, and the connection between brand strategy and execution.
  • Lead, coach, and grow the creative organization, including Creative Directors, Associate Creative Directors, designers, copywriters, and social content creators for both brands and the Brand Voice function.
  • Protect the distinctiveness of each brand, ensuring DSC and Truly remain separate in voice, design language, and casting, avoiding any drift towards a house style.
  • Own brand voice consistency for both brands across all channels (paid, owned, earned, retail, packaging, site) in partnership with the Brand Voice owner.
  • Personally lead concepting and ideation for key initiatives such as platform work, launches, and tentpole campaigns.
  • Monitor cultural and competitive trends in personal care, grooming, and beauty to ensure brands remain at the forefront of fashion, social, digital, and marketing trends.
  • Partner with the Chief Brand & Innovation Officer on packaging portfolio strategy and design, including architecture, hierarchy, shelf impact, and quality.
  • Define product presentation across all portfolios and channels, from product detail pages to the retail shelf, and develop creative toolkits for channel execution.
  • Identify and leverage operational synergies (shared capabilities, tooling, production, design systems, standards) without compromising brand distinctiveness.
  • Partner with Brand Management on briefs to ensure creative input early in the strategy development process.
  • Collaborate with Channel, Retail, and Amazon leads to ensure creative is optimized for its intended platforms.
  • Establish and maintain high standards for creative quality, including managing difficult conversations, while empowering teams to achieve results autonomously.
  • Develop an efficient creative review process that is fast, clear, decisive, and avoids becoming a bottleneck.
  • Champion the use of AI-native creative tools to expand team capabilities and testing, while ensuring ideas and humor remain human-led.
  • Manage creative resourcing, prioritization, and relationships with contractors and partners aligned with portfolio priorities.
  • Represent the creative function to the executive team and the Board, advocating for the work.
  • Manage creative resourcing, prioritization, and contractor and partner relationships against portfolio priorities.
  • Represent creative to the executive team and the Board, and make the case for the work.

  • Comprehensive benefit plans with low premium options, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, along with supplemental coverage options.
  • Free life insurance, short-term disability, and long-term disability.
  • 401(k) plan with a company match of 100% of the first 2%, and 50% of up to an additional 4% with no vesting period.
  • Unlimited vacation and generous sick time.
  • Half day Fridays year-round (subject to business needs).
