About The Position

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE or PlayStation) is seeking an experienced attorney to lead its Product Counsel function across Hardware, Software, and Services. The role supports global teams developing and operating the PlayStation platform, including consoles, software, PlayStation Store, and subscription services. The Senior Director will establish a model for product counsel teams to work with subject matter experts in privacy, online safety, competition, product compliance, and other legal areas. The position requires strong judgment in balancing legal risk with business strategy, broad knowledge of international laws and regulations affecting PlayStation products, and the ability to draw on legal subject matter experts and senior leaders to provide nuanced advice. The role is based in San Mateo, California, with a hybrid schedule requiring at least two days per week in the office. Full relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates.

Requirements

At least 18 years of progressive experience, particularly as product counsel in a technology company, including experience as a global lead across an organization.
JD or LLM degree from a top law school.
Membership in a U.S. state bar; at minimum, qualification for and prompt attainment of Registered In-House Counsel status in California, maintained throughout employment.
Experience counseling product development, technical, business, and support teams and working closely with designers, engineers, and product management.
Experience leading the formulation of legal advice across global markets.
Experience leading and managing teams of legal professionals.
Legal expertise in several relevant areas, such as consumer protection laws and regulations, FTC or DPA regulatory actions, consumer online account issues, e-commerce and digital entertainment distribution, intellectual property, privacy, data security, social media law, content regulation, FCC regulations, and legal issues affecting consumer hardware products.
Ability to balance legal risks with business strategy and provide effective product counsel leadership.
Ability to explain complex legal issues in basic terms to non-legal stakeholders.
Comfort with technology, business-to-consumer user experience interfaces, consumer electronics devices, and connected platforms.
Transactional experience and strong transactional skills.
Ability to thrive in a team environment.
Superior organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to influence and persuade business, technical, and support functions within a large multinational corporation.
Enthusiasm for technology, law, and business, and eagerness to continue learning.

Nice To Haves

California State Bar membership is preferred.
Experience in the video game industry is a strong plus.

Responsibilities

Lead the Product Counsel function and manage a team of legal professionals supporting PlayStation product teams.
Collaborate with and advise stakeholders in product, engineering, product management, security, privacy, and legal throughout product development, launch, and market strategy.
Advise on regulatory, legal, and compliance issues affecting PlayStation products.
Monitor U.S. and international laws and regulations related to product matters, including privacy, safety, online safety, and hardware regulatory compliance.
Formulate global legal advice in close collaboration with legal department members in Europe and Asia.
Explain complex legal issues clearly to non-legal stakeholders.
Provide pragmatic day-to-day and strategic advice to minimize legal risks while advancing business goals and initiatives.
Draft clear and concise communications, including public- and client-facing materials.
Manage internal projects, provide training, establish processes and procedures, and drive cross-functional efforts to completion.
