About The Position

Volta is seeking a Senior Director, Infrastructure Engineering to lead engineering across its global portfolio of AI factories. Reporting directly to the VP, Development and Design within the Delivery organisation, this leader will build and manage a team of subject matter experts across infrastructure architecture and engineering disciplines, including power, cooling, structures, controls and network infrastructure. The role owns Volta’s engineering design standards and their deployment across projects in EMEA and AMER. It works closely with the Design organisation on live projects and the Reference Design for AI factory infrastructure, and partners with the CTO and CPO organisations to ensure sites can bring compute online consistently. The Senior Director will establish the engineering function, standards and ways of working as the company scales.

Requirements

  • Degree in electrical, mechanical, civil or building services engineering.
  • Significant experience in data centre or mission-critical infrastructure engineering, including senior leadership of multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Deep technical expertise in at least one core discipline, such as power distribution or cooling, and strong working knowledge across infrastructure disciplines.
  • Track record developing and deploying design standards, reference designs or basis-of-design documents for a hyperscale, colocation or large-scale data centre developer.
  • Hands-on experience with high-density and liquid-cooled environments for AI and HPC workloads, and understanding of how GPU cluster requirements drive facility design.
  • Strong commercial judgement in balancing capital expenditure, schedule, reliability and operability in design decisions.
  • Executive-level communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaborative leadership style that builds trust across partner teams, and the conviction to uphold standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Chartered or professional engineer status, such as CEng or PE.
  • Exposure to both North American and European projects, or to utility-scale power, onsite generation or energy storage.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, develop and grow a multidisciplinary team of infrastructure engineering subject matter experts spanning architecture, electrical, mechanical, cooling, structural, civil, controls and network infrastructure.
  • Develop and deploy engineering design standards and specifications for AI factories, ensuring consistent application across projects and regions.
  • Work with the Design organisation to provide engineering input into Volta’s Reference Design for AI factory infrastructure, balancing performance, cost, delivery speed and scalability.
  • Provide engineering expertise to live projects from concept through detailed design, construction and commissioning, and resolve technical issues that could delay delivery.
  • Partner with the CTO and CPO organisations to align facility design with compute, rack and network requirements and enable consistent compute deployment across the portfolio.
  • Track AI hardware developments, including rack densities, liquid cooling and power architectures, and translate them into design standards for next-generation compute.
  • Own engineering governance, including design reviews, technical assurance and design authority for departures from standards.
  • Work with Procurement to standardise long-lead equipment specifications and enable framework agreements, prefabrication and modular delivery at scale.
  • Champion safety in design, reliability, maintainability, and energy and water efficiency, working with Operations to design facilities for effective operation.
  • Incorporate delivery and operations lessons into standards so future AI factories can be built faster, more safely and efficiently.
  • Provide engineering status, risk and decision reporting to the VP, Development and Design and the executive team.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary based on the work performed, not previous salary.
  • Equity in Volta, offering the opportunity to share in the company’s long-term success.
  • Retirement or pension contributions.
  • Comprehensive health, wellbeing and insurance benefits.
  • Generous vacation days each year.
