Senior Director, Enterprise IT Operations

Biotechnology Innovation OrganizationWashington, DC
$175,000 - $200,000Hybrid

About The Position

Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) is the world’s largest advocacy association representing member companies, state biotechnology groups, academic and research institutions, and related organizations across the United States and in 30+ countries. BIO members are involved in the research and development of innovative healthcare products. BIO also produces the BIO International Convention, the world’s largest gathering of the biotechnology industry, along with industry-leading investors and partnering meetings held around the world. BIO’s work depends on technology that stays up and stays secure. This role owns the network, cloud, security, and support environment that BIO’s staff, events, and members rely on every day. The Senior Director, Enterprise IT Operations leads the design, security, and day-to-day operation of BIO’s core network and hybrid cloud environment on Azure and Microsoft 365. The role owns the service desk and end-user experience, security operations, disaster recovery, and the delivery of infrastructure projects that keep the environment current. This is a strategic and hands-on role. The right person sets technical direction, leads a small team, holds managed service providers to their commitments, and stays close enough to the environment to keep it reliable and secure. Success is measured in uptime, response times, and remediation rather than activity. This role executes within the delivery and contract governance framework owned by the Senior Director, Program Management, and partners with the VP, Data Strategy and Data Services on shared platforms and integrations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent experience required.
  • 10+ years of progressive IT experience, including five or more years leading enterprise IT operations or infrastructure teams.
  • Deep, hands-on Azure and Microsoft 365 administration at an enterprise level.
  • Proven network and security ownership across firewalls, wireless, VPN, and endpoint.
  • Demonstrated success implementing IT service management practices (ITIL or equivalent), including service levels, change management, and incident management.
  • Experience building or maturing a cybersecurity and incident-response program, with working knowledge of disaster recovery and business continuity.
  • A track record of managing managed service providers and vendors to measurable outcomes.
  • Experience owning an IT operations budget, with examples of cost optimization.
  • Strong communication skills. You can brief executives on risk and security posture and go deep with engineers on configuration.
  • Sound judgment under pressure, especially during incidents and major events.
  • Comfortable holding vendors and service providers accountable to their commitments.
  • A bias for documentation, repeatable process, and measurable service levels.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant certifications such as CISSP, CISM, ITIL, or Azure Administrator or Architect preferred.
  • Experience in an association, nonprofit, or membership organization preferred.
  • Experience supporting large-scale events or conferences, including registration, AV, and on-site show technology, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Own network routing, firewalls (SonicWALL), wireless (Ruckus), and the Azure and Microsoft 365 environment, including identity and access management and endpoint management.
  • Maintain published availability and performance targets for core systems, with monitoring, alerting, and capacity planning that catch issues before users do.
  • Own disaster recovery and business continuity planning, including documented runbooks and at least annual testing.
  • Run day-to-day security operations: vulnerability management, patching, endpoint protection, email security, and incident response.
  • Partner with leadership and external security resources to execute cybersecurity assessment findings and maintain alignment to a recognized framework such as NIST CSF or CIS Controls.
  • Lead security awareness efforts and enforce Microsoft 365 and data hygiene standards consistent with BIO’s AI governance and acceptable use policies.
  • Own the service desk and end-user experience, running roughly 120 cases a month against defined service levels with measured response and resolution times and visible reporting.
  • Run employee technology onboarding and offboarding as a reliable, auditable process in partnership with HR.
  • Own hardware and end-user device provisioning and lifecycle management.
  • Provide executive support and meeting, AV, and event technology support, including on-site support for the BIO International Convention and other major convenings.
  • Deliver infrastructure and operations projects on committed timelines, with clear milestones, dependencies, and risk escalation.
  • Execute within the intake, prioritization, and change management framework owned by the Senior Director, Program Management, and provide accurate status into portfolio reporting.
  • Partner with the VP, Data Strategy and Data Services on shared platforms and integrations, with clean handoffs and explicit ownership boundaries.
  • Manage the day-to-day performance of managed service providers and infrastructure vendors, including firewall, wireless, and telecom, against contracted service levels.
  • Provide technical requirements, scope input, and performance evidence to the Senior Director, Program Management, who owns contract standards, SOW governance, and renewal strategy.
  • Own the IT operations budget: forecast accurately, identify savings in licensing and contracts, and tie spend to measurable service levels.
  • Lead, develop, and grow a small team of IT professionals, setting clear responsibilities, decision rights, and growth paths.
  • Build documentation and cross-training so no system depends on a single person.
  • Other duties as assigned
