About The Position

The Senior Director, Editorial will lead and manage a senior editorial team of five, responsible for advancing the quality, consistency, and strategic impact of assessments and publications for the SAT Suite and other College Board programs. This role involves setting and upholding the team’s strategic direction, priorities, standards, and operating procedures to ensure editorial excellence, efficiency, and alignment to organizational goals. While some editing may occur, the primary focus is on developing talent through coaching, mentoring, and performance management, strengthening team capability, and driving long-term planning and major cross-divisional initiatives. The position requires close partnership with senior leaders and cross-functional stakeholders to champion editorial standards, coordinate strategy, resolve dependencies, and ensure the team’s work delivers meaningful impact for students and other stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or a related field (master’s degree preferred).
  • 10 or more years of copyediting, proofreading, and fact checking experience, preferably in educational publishing, assessment, or technical content.
  • 3 or more years of people management experience, including coaching, performance management, and talent development.
  • Demonstrated success setting strategic direction and leading high-performing teams in a cross-functional environment.
  • Deep expertise in grammar, usage, punctuation, and syntax, with comprehensive knowledge of publishing and publications standards and practices and the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Proven ability to establish and uphold editorial standards, SOPs, and quality benchmarks at a team or organizational level.
  • Experience leading large-scale or cross-divisional strategic initiatives, with responsibility for outcomes, resourcing, and alignment to organizational priorities.
  • Strong systems-driven mindset with the ability to identify operational gaps and implement scalable innovations and improvements.
  • Advanced proficiency in content management systems, technical platforms, and workflow tools, with experience evaluating or implementing new technologies (including AI-enabled solutions) to improve efficiency and mitigate risk.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence senior leaders and build consensus in complex environments.
  • Strong organizational and strategic planning skills, with the ability to balance long-term vision and day-to-day operational demands.

  • Ability to travel 1–3 times a year to College Board offices or on behalf of College Board business.

Responsibilities

  • Copyedit and proofread content for College Board programs such as the SAT Suite, ACCUPLACER, and AP.
  • Copyedit, proofread, and fact check test questions, assessment support materials, and other complex, high-visibility, or high-stakes publications in various formats (digital apps, print, etc.), adjusting scope appropriately and modeling advanced editorial judgment.
  • Apply and interpret College Board and other relevant style guidelines with nuance and consistency to all edited content, especially in ambiguous scenarios.
  • Provide guidance on substantive editorial questions and resolve escalations requiring leadership oversight.
  • Lead and manage the editorial team to drive strategic direction, quality standards, and performance.
  • Shape and communicate the team’s vision, priorities, quality benchmarks, and success metrics in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Develop, coach, mentor, and manage a talented team of editors and graphic designers through regular feedback, performance management, goal setting, and career development planning.
  • Monitor team performance using data and feedback, identifying opportunities to improve processes, quality control, and operational effectiveness.
  • Manage the team’s workload calendar, project timelines, and inter-departmental coordination efforts, effectively managing competing priorities and ensuring high-quality, timely editorial results.
  • Promote a collaborative, constructive, mission-focused work environment and high-performing team culture grounded in accountability, continuous improvement, and student-centered impact.
  • Allocate resources effectively across programs and initiatives, balancing workload, risk, and strategic priorities.

  • Participate in professional growth opportunities and present relevant information to the editorial team and other stakeholders.
  • Grow the team through ongoing development, creating stretch opportunities, and building a talent bench.
  • Lead long-term planning and major cross-divisional initiatives while representing and championing the team across the organization.
  • Design and lead strategic initiatives, evidence-based experimentation, special projects, and long-term planning efforts that advance editorial quality, innovation, and operational excellence.
  • Own outcomes for major team and cross-divisional projects, including scope, resourcing, timelines, and alignment to organizational goals.
  • Partner with senior leaders and stakeholders to integrate editorial standards into upstream planning and development processes.
  • Oversee the development and evolution of shared documentation, templates, workflow standards, and quality benchmarks.
  • Identify systemic gaps or risks and implement scalable solutions that strengthen efficiency, quality, alignment, and impact.
  • Champion the adoption of new tools, technologies, and AI-enabled workflows to improve quality, risk mitigation, and team effectiveness.
  • Work extensively with cross-team, cross-divisional, and cross-organizational stakeholders to coordinate strategy and resolve dependencies.
  • Advocate for editorial standards and team priorities in high-stakes or complex discussions.
  • Ensure clear communication of editorial rationale, risks, and decisions to senior or leadership-level audiences.
