About The Position

This Senior Director position in Business Development - Partnerships plays a crucial leadership role, supporting the mission of Mayo Clinic Business Development. The role involves executing and overseeing multiple projects and initiatives, from inception to completion. Responsibilities include organizing opportunities into work teams, assigning staff, reporting project status to leadership, and representing the department externally. Depending on departmental needs, the Senior Director may manage direct reports, overseeing performance reviews, goal-setting, mentoring, and career development. This role shares accountability for the department's overall success, prioritizing efforts to achieve optimal outcomes and modeling Mayo Clinic's values and goals. The department is structured into three functional Work Units: Partnerships, Commercialization, and Technology Development, with specific responsibilities outlined for each. This position is focused on the Biopharmaceuticals Work Team and will typically be placed into two Work Teams. This is a hybrid position requiring proximity to a Mayo Clinic site or presence in the San Francisco Bay Area or Boston MA area.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree required, or an advanced degree preferred (e.g., PhD, MD, JD), in business, science, or related relevant field.
  • Eight years specific experience related to the role and area of work: business development, finance/venture capital, technology transfer, venture management, i/p commercialization, licensing, patents, partnerships, business-to-business collaborations, investments, start-up companies and/or sourcing partnering opportunities in the health care, medical/biotechnology or financial/venture capital industries.
  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of ten years experience parallel to the above.
  • Seven years experience directly related to technology licensing for roles within the Commercialization Work Unit.
  • In lieu of a degree, a minimum of years of applicable experience equal to the number of years normally required to earn the degree will be recognized as satisfying the degree requirement (e.g., four years experience equivalency for a Bachelor’s degree, two years experience equivalency for a Master’s degree, two years experience equivalency for an advanced degree).
  • Ability to perform successfully in a business development/ technology commercialization role.

Responsibilities

  • Directly support the mission of Mayo Clinic Business Development.
  • Execute and oversee multiple projects or major initiatives, activities, deals, and opportunities from inception to execution.
  • Organize opportunities into appropriate work teams and assign staff.
  • Communicate and report project status to department leadership.
  • Represent the department with other Mayo Clinic departments, organizational leadership, and external entities.
  • Manage direct reporting staff, including performance reviews, goal-setting, mentoring/coaching, and career development, if assigned.
  • Share accountability for the overall success of the department, prioritizing and balancing efforts with leadership colleagues.
  • Model the values, policies, and goals of the department and Mayo Clinic.
  • Source, evaluate, analyze, and develop new business opportunities for Mayo Clinic, including partnerships, joint ventures, new company spin-offs, investments, mergers, and acquisitions.
  • Work with areas throughout Mayo Clinic and the marketplace to identify new business opportunities, connecting them with existing operational units in alignment with the Mayo Clinic strategic plan.
  • Contribute to the development of a network of industry, entrepreneurial, and investor contacts.
  • Evaluate the commercial potential of medical inventions and discoveries, developing and implementing technology sales and marketing plans.
  • Manage the patent process, identify potential commercial partners, and negotiate license agreements.
  • Manage relationships with industry and advise physicians and scientists on intellectual property protection and technology-based business matters.
  • Facilitate the development and commercialization of Mayo Clinic technologies by collaborating with internal staff, external companies, entrepreneurs, and investors.
  • Identify, evaluate, and support the development of novel technologies, focusing on improving patient care.
  • Collaborate with physicians, researchers, and cross-functional teams to advance innovative solutions.
  • Facilitate invention disclosure and intellectual property development, including identifying patentable innovations and supporting IP strategy.
  • Conduct feasibility assessments, market analyses, and competitive evaluations.
  • Develop materials to communicate and promote technologies.
  • Monitor industry trends and emerging technologies.
  • Support the planning and execution of technology development projects and commercialization efforts.
  • Source, evaluate, and execute strategic and financial investments aligned with Mayo’s organizational priorities.
  • Assess opportunities against investment criteria and capital structure standards.
  • Manage financial modeling, valuation, scenario analysis, and diligence.
  • Work with organizational departments, teams, and investment committees to facilitate investments.
  • Perform and manage post-deal activities, including governance and reporting.
