Senior DevOps Engineer

Art of Problem Solving•San Diego, CA
•$134,000 - $180,000•Hybrid

About The Position

The Senior DevOps Engineer will join AoPS’s Platform Group, which owns infrastructure, developer experience, and core services used across AoPS products. The role focuses on making systems more visible, resilient, and easier for engineers to build on. The engineer will lead observability efforts as the architecture becomes more distributed, including logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, and helping product teams define meaningful service metrics and SLOs. They will operate and evolve the production Kubernetes platform, build CI/CD pipelines and self-service developer tooling, and help teams ship safely and efficiently. The role also leads incident response, identifies root causes, conducts effective post-mortems, and flags stability risks in application designs. The engineer will shape engineering standards for observability, Kubernetes, and developer tooling; mentor engineers through code reviews; and explore how AI can improve infrastructure and engineering work. This is a hybrid, full-time position based at AoPS headquarters in San Diego, California. The salary range is $134,000–$180,000. Employment is contingent on a successful background check, and candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States; sponsorship, including STEM-OPT and H-1B, is unavailable.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional experience in DevOps, SRE, platform engineering, or software engineering, including at least 3 years focused on infrastructure or operations.
  • Operational experience running Kubernetes in production.
  • Deep observability experience, including hands-on proficiency with a modern platform such as Datadog, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry, and building tooling around it.
  • Experience defining SLOs and helping product teams adopt effective observability practices.
  • Strong experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and internal developer tooling.
  • Experience designing, securing, and managing scalable infrastructure in AWS.
  • Proficiency with Infrastructure-as-Code, preferably Terraform.
  • Solid software engineering skills and ability to write production-quality code for tools and automation.
  • Track record of leading incident response and turning lessons learned into lasting improvements.
  • AI-forward mindset and genuine curiosity about how AI is changing infrastructure and engineering work.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to influence engineering practices across teams.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; sponsorship, including STEM-OPT and H-1B, is not offered.
  • Employment is contingent on successful completion of a background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building or contributing to AI-powered developer tooling.
  • Experience in EdTech or consumer products.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the observability practice, building logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting for a growing distributed architecture.
  • Work with product engineers to define service quality measures, select meaningful metrics and SLOs, and incorporate observability into development.
  • Operate and evolve the production Kubernetes platform, maintaining reliability, security, and cost-effectiveness as it grows.
  • Design CI/CD pipelines and self-service tools that enable product teams to ship quickly and safely.
  • Lead incident response, identify root causes, and conduct post-mortems that prevent recurrence.
  • Identify stability risks in application designs before they reach production.
  • Shape engineering standards for observability, Kubernetes, and developer tooling.
  • Support other engineers’ development through code reviews and mentorship.
  • Explore ways to use AI to improve infrastructure and engineering effectiveness, and share findings with the team.

Benefits

  • Multiple options for medical, dental, and vision plans.
