Senior Database Engineer – Azure Data Platform
About The Position
We are seeking a highly skilled Database Engineer who is passionate about building, optimizing, and maintaining large-scale data platforms. In this role, you will work across the full lifecycle of database systems—from architecture and configuration to performance tuning and operational reliability. You will join a team of talented engineers in a fast-paced, agile environment, contributing to the development of an innovative multi-tenant, cloud-based payments platform. This role is ideal for a motivated self-starter who enjoys solving complex data challenges and collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams. The ideal candidate brings strong expertise in SQL Server within Azure PaaS environments and can provide technical guidance to engineering and product teams to ensure high-performing and secure data solutions. This position reports to the Data and Analytics Manager.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with MS SQL Server / T-SQL.
- 3+ years of experience supporting enterprise database systems in production environments.
- 5+ years of experience with Databricks in Azure.
- Strong programming experience with Python and PySpark, working with large-scale financial datasets.
- Proven experience building and maintaining secure, high-performance data processing pipelines.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Highly organized, proactive, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment.

Nice To Haves
- Experience designing complex ETL pipelines across multiple platforms.
- Familiarity with Parquet, Delta Lake, and Medallion data architecture.
- Experience with Atlassian tools (JIRA, Confluence, Bitbucket).
- Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and automation tools such as Azure DevOps or TeamCity.
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure cloud services.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, or similar analytics tools.
- Experience working in PCI or SOC2 compliant environments.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools such as Claude Code.
- Prior experience in the payments or financial services industry.
Responsibilities
- Partner with a team of database engineers to support enterprise data initiatives and platform reliability.
- Design, develop, and optimize SQL objects including stored procedures, functions, tables, views, and triggers.
- Monitor, tune, and maintain database performance, capacity, and scalability.
- Develop long-term strategies to support the reliability and growth of critical data systems.
- Research and implement database solutions aligned with product requirements.
- Diagnose and resolve database and infrastructure-related performance issues.
- Support environments running multiple SQL platforms including PostgreSQL.
- Manage data lifecycle processes including migration, replication, user access, backups, and recovery.
- Enforce and maintain data security, retention, and governance policies.
- Contribute to cloud-based platform infrastructure across IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS environments.
- Collaborate with development teams using modern source control tools such as GitHub or Bitbucket.
