Senior Database Administrator

Omniscius Consulting•Orlando, FL

About The Position

The Senior Database Administrator owns steady-state administration of the program’s on-premises database estate while it operates in a monitored hybrid enclave and workloads migrate to an Azure Government environment. The primary focus is on-premises database administration across two tracks: SQL Server databases administered through SQL Server Management Studio, and MariaDB databases supporting the on-premises ServiceNow instance on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9.8, administered over SSH using command-line tools. Candidates who also support the cloud migration should meet the additional requirements listed for that scope. The role includes maintaining database inventory and documentation, operating within program change management, recording administrative actions and evidence, supporting database-layer incident response, and sustaining the legacy estate through eventual decommissioning, final backup, and archival as systems retire or migrate. Participation in an on-call rotation is noted as subject to confirmation with the program office. Additional cloud migration support, if included in the position, involves work with Azure Government and Azure data services, especially Azure SQL Managed Instance; migration assessment and execution; compatibility remediation; and DevSecOps release practices. The administrator also supports estate disposition decisions with accurate inventory and data-handling.

Requirements

  • Five or more years administering production SQL Server databases, including backup and restore, security, performance tuning, and routine maintenance.
  • Hands-on MariaDB or MySQL administration from the Linux command line, including SSH-based administration of RHEL hosts.
  • Comfort with PowerShell and Windows Server environments for the SQL Server estate.
  • Administrative automation scripting with PowerShell, T-SQL, and bash for RHEL-side tasks.
  • DoD 8140/8570 IAT Level II baseline certification, such as Security+ CE, or ability to obtain it within the contract-required window.
  • Active DoD Secret clearance, or eligibility per contract requirements.
  • Disciplined change-management habits and clear written documentation.
  • If assigned cloud migration support: familiarity with Azure Government environments and Azure data services, particularly Azure SQL Managed Instance.
  • If assigned cloud migration support: exposure to database migration assessment and execution using Data Migration Assistant, Azure Database Migration Service, and backup/restore-based cutover patterns, including schema and compatibility remediation.
  • If assigned cloud migration support: ability to work within a DevSecOps pipeline discipline, with changes promoted through automated gates and artifacts and evidence produced per release.
  • If assigned cloud migration support: understanding of estate disposition planning, including workloads that retire or are replaced by enterprise services, and support for decisions through accurate inventory and data-handling.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with the ServiceNow platform’s data layer.
  • Experience operating in DoD or Army enclaves.
  • Familiarity with database monitoring tooling.
  • Deeper RHEL administration experience, including systemd service management, dnf patch coordination, and SELinux awareness.
  • Microsoft DP-300 (Azure Database Administrator) certification.
  • AZ-900 certification.
  • Experience with centrally provisioned Army cloud environments.

Responsibilities

  • Administer production SQL Server databases through SQL Server Management Studio, including backup and recovery, periodic restore verification, performance tuning, index and statistics maintenance, security and permissions, capacity and health monitoring, and patch coordination through program change control.
  • Administer MariaDB databases supporting the on-premises ServiceNow instance on RHEL 9.8 hosts over SSH, including service health, logical and physical backups, users and grants, configuration, and log review.
  • Maintain database inventory and documentation, including configurations, backup and retention schedules, and tested recovery runbooks.
  • Operate within program change management and record administrative actions and evidence according to policy.
  • Support incident response for database-layer issues and participate in the on-call rotation if applicable, subject to confirmation with the program office.
  • Sustain the legacy database estate during the hybrid-enclave period, including eventual decommissioning, final backup, and archival as systems retire or migrate.
  • If assigned cloud migration support, contribute to database migration assessment and execution, schema and compatibility remediation, and backup/restore-based cutovers.
  • If assigned cloud migration support, work within DevSecOps pipeline practices, promoting changes through automated gates and producing artifacts and evidence per release.
  • If assigned cloud migration support, support estate disposition planning with accurate inventory and data-handling.
