About The Position

Aretum is seeking a Senior Data Solution Engineer to design data governance, tagging, and metadata standards and work with medallion architecture. The role supports consequential design decisions and evaluates whether solutions can scale or may accumulate technical debt. As a federal consulting organization, Aretum may require employees to handle Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and comply with applicable safeguarding and compliance requirements. This is a remote position, with occasional travel of less than 10% potentially required for project needs, client meetings, team collaboration events, or training. Travel will be communicated in advance whenever possible. The position supports a federal government contract, is open only to U.S. citizens, and requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability Determination, depending on the agency’s background investigation requirements.

Requirements

  • BS/BA degree and 6 years of direct production experience with Databricks and Unity Catalog, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience designing data governance, tagging, and metadata standards.
  • Deep understanding of medallion architecture and how metadata, sensitivity, and access requirements evolve across Bronze, Silver, and Gold layers.
  • Experience implementing column masking, row-level security, and dynamic access controls.
  • Ability to reconcile competing requirements across stakeholders.
  • Strong SQL and Spark skills.
  • Proficiency in defining pipeline configuration and data contracts declaratively, such as with YAML, as version-controlled, enforceable artifacts.
  • U.S. citizenship is required due to federal contract requirements.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability Determination, depending on agency background investigation requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to cybersecurity challenges, OCSF, and threat intelligence.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement data management and governance solutions in Databricks and Unity Catalog, ensuring datasets are classified, documented, secured, and managed throughout their life cycle.
  • Support data architecture and design decisions by evaluating solution scalability, maintainability, and performance.
  • Develop and implement data governance tagging, metadata standards, and classification frameworks to support discovery, traceability, compliance, and consistent governance.
  • Define and enforce governance requirements across Bronze, Silver, and Gold medallion architecture layers, ensuring metadata, sensitivity classifications, and access controls evolve appropriately as data is transformed.
  • Implement and maintain column-level masking, row-level security, and dynamic access controls to protect sensitive data while enabling authorized access.
  • Develop and optimize data pipelines using SQL and Spark for reliable, scalable, and efficient production data processing.
  • Collaborate with technical teams, data owners, security stakeholders, and business partners to reconcile competing requirements and translate them into practical data solutions.

Benefits

  • Health care plan, including medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Life insurance, including basic, voluntary, and AD&D coverage
