Senior Data Engineer – Energy Trading & Cloud Data Solutions
About The Position
Talan is seeking a Senior Data Engineer with strong Energy Trading expertise to support a major client in designing and delivering cloud-based data solutions. The position combines hands-on data engineering, product ownership, and stakeholder collaboration to deliver scalable solutions and improve business efficiency. The role is based in New York City and is hybrid, with at least four days onsite per week. The engineer will design, develop, and optimize cloud data pipelines, ETL/ELT workflows, and data models using Python and SQL. The role also includes collaborating with Energy Trading, Assets, Operations, and IT teams to translate business needs into technical solutions; owning and prioritizing product backlogs, roadmaps, and releases; and improving data architecture, governance, and cloud platform capabilities. The position applies Agile delivery, CI/CD, data quality, documentation, and continuous-improvement practices. Talan offers sponsorship under specified treaty-based U.S. work visas, including TN and E-2 for eligible Canadian, Mexican, and French citizens. Other visa types, including H-1B, are not supported or transferred.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience. The qualifications also identify Energy, Finance, or Quantitative Finance as relevant fields.
- At least 5 years of experience in Data Engineering, including cloud-based data pipelines and integration.
- At least 2 years of experience in Energy Trading, Energy Markets, Asset Management, or Energy Operations.
- Strong hands-on programming experience with Python and SQL.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
- Strong understanding of ETL/ELT, data modeling, workflow orchestration, and API integrations.
- Experience with data quality, governance, metadata, and data lineage.
- Demonstrated ability to manage business requirements, product backlogs, and delivery roadmaps.
- Experience collaborating directly with business stakeholders and cross-functional technical teams.
- Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Nice To Haves
- Experience working with energy trading data, commodity markets, or Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM) systems.
- Familiarity with power and gas markets, trading positions, pricing, P&L, or asset-related data.
- Experience with modern cloud data platforms, data warehouses, or lakehouse architectures.
- Knowledge of Agile delivery methodologies and DevOps practices.
- Experience supporting enterprise-scale data transformation initiatives.
