Senior Core Infrastructure Engineer

Oracle•Nashville, TN
•$79,200 - $209,500

About The Position

Designs, implements, and optimizes distributed-system components with an emphasis on scalability, resiliency, and operability. The role delivers features and load/performance tests; uses data plane platforms and distributed state tools for high-volume retrieval, storage, and processing; and reviews peer implementations for scalability compliance. It builds fault-tolerant paths using redundancy, replication, and automatic failover, applies recovery-oriented principles, and implements retries, circuit breakers, and timeouts. The engineer proactively detects and mitigates issues through tests, alarms, dashboards, and telemetry; authors runbooks; and participates in incident response and root-cause analyses. The role also implements replication and synchronization, develops automation and Infrastructure as Code for troubleshooting and maintenance, and applies security controls while meeting change-management, compliance, and documentation standards. As a Core Infrastructure Software Engineer, the employee designs, develops, and operates highly available, scalable, fault-tolerant microservices across control plane, connectivity, distributed-systems data plane, and Linux daemon technologies. The employee contributes throughout the product lifecycle, from conceptualization and product definition through design, development, launch, and operational maturity. The role identifies opportunities to automate engineering workflows across development, testing, troubleshooting, operations, and documentation, using AI-assisted and agentic approaches where appropriate. It measures and improves reliability, delivery velocity, operational efficiency, customer outcomes, and engineering productivity, and shares effective practices across the team. The posting describes the desired engineer as hands-on, adaptable, self-motivated, quick to learn, thoughtful about applying new tools, and interested in high-availability and scalability challenges.

  • At least 3 years of experience with distributed systems or backend development.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related engineering field.
  • Proficiency with data structures, algorithms, and operating systems.
  • Experience with distributed systems, including familiarity with the CAP theorem, consensus, messaging, and high availability.
  • Willingness to learn and responsibly apply AI/LLM tools, skills, and automation to improve engineering workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and contribute to distributed-system components that support horizontal and vertical scaling, including use of distributed state management tools.
  • Optimize code and systems for large-scale data processing and use data plane platform components for large-scale data retrieval, storage, and processing.
  • Implement scalability requirements for assigned components and review team members’ implementations.
  • Implement performance and load testing.
  • Build fault-tolerant components capable of withstanding in-service updates through redundancy, replication, and automatic failover.
  • Apply recovery-oriented computing principles and implement retries, circuit breakers, and timeouts to handle service disruptions and network unreliability.
  • Implement tests and alarm configurations to detect and address issues or failures proactively.
  • Draft and execute runbooks and operational procedures to support recovery from failures.
  • Build and customize dashboards, telemetry systems, and alerting mechanisms to monitor component health.
  • Design and implement feature requirements and tests within existing systems, including fault-injection and brown-out test scenarios.
  • Implement data replication and synchronization techniques to maintain data integrity and availability.
  • Diagnose, debug, and resolve issues in system components, and implement strategies that avoid customer maintenance windows when resolving issues.
  • Design and implement automation scripts and tooling for troubleshooting operational issues.
  • Participate in operational support rotations, incident response, and root-cause investigations.
  • Apply security measures, including encryption and access controls, to protect data and applications in multi-tenant environments; implement remediation plans.
  • Collaborate to ensure cloud infrastructure complies with relevant industry standards and regulations and that documentation remains up to date.
  • Maintain automation scripts and tools, including Infrastructure as Code, for managing cloud infrastructure.
  • Follow change-management plans for patching, updating, and rolling back applications.
  • Design, develop, and operate highly available, scalable, fault-tolerant microservices across control plane, connectivity, distributed-systems data plane, and Linux daemon technologies.
  • Contribute across the product lifecycle from conceptualization and product definition through design, development, launch, and operational maturity.
  • Identify opportunities to automate workflows across development, testing, troubleshooting, operations, and documentation, using AI-assisted and agentic approaches where appropriate.
  • Measure and improve reliability, delivery velocity, operational efficiency, customer outcomes, and engineering productivity, and share effective practices across the team.
