About The Position

Reporting to the Manager, Centre for Language Learning, the incumbent develops, organizes, promotes, and leads workshops, events, and counselling sessions to facilitate cohesion among students and cross-cultural exchanges while providing individual student support on issues related to campus and community integration. Contributes to the sector’s marketing and communication aims to ensure the timely integration of students into the Centre for Language Learning, the University of Ottawa, and the larger community. This position is on-site full time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (ex. Education, Second Language Teaching, Psychology) or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • 3 years of experience minimum coordinating and facilitating programs and events.
  • Sound judgment, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to counsel international students
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems and to identify and recommend improvements to program services.
  • Ability to work under pressure, multi-task, set priorities and organize schedules to meet firm deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and to develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Bilingualism (spoken and written).

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in areas related to language assessment or working with language learners is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, organizes, promotes and leads weekly socio-cultural activities and off-campus outings while developing and following contingency plans for potential emergencies to develop a cohesive learning community within the Centre for Language Learning.
  • Develops and implements various tools, such as focus groups and surveys, to measure student satisfaction with student services to initiate or recommend new services or improvements to existing ones.
  • Leads, plans, develops, and evaluates pre-arrival and post-arrival program orientations and workshops for students on topics such as dealing with culture shock, mastering intercultural communication, managing intercultural conflicts, adjusting to the host culture, identifying key services on campus, and effectively transitioning into academic programs to accelerate student integration into the University of Ottawa and the surrounding community to ensure that students are properly supported.
  • Serves as a first point of contact on issues related to student life, adaptation to campus and Canada, housing, volunteer and job search, and aspects of daily living in order to ensure that students have the information and support they need to flourish at the University of Ottawa.
  • Leads, plans, organizes, promotes, and evaluates program events, such as welcome and closing ceremonies, to increase student satisfaction.
  • Coordinates, plans, and evaluates student support activities mentoring, buddy systems, and campus/community involvement initiatives with current students and alumni.
  • Recruits, supervises, and evaluates monitors for these activities.
  • Develops partnerships and works closely with sectors within the University and in the surrounding community such as homestay agencies, volunteer groups, and community service organizations to ensure student integration into the campus and the community.
  • Delivers key information and feedback to students on office procedures, deadlines and student services through presentations, regular classroom visits and multimedia tools.
  • In collaboration with the sector’s Recruitment Coordinator, develops, monitors, and revises content for marketing and communication platforms such as webpages, newsletters, social media tools, and brochures to facilitate student integration and the efficient functioning of program operations and services.
