About The Position

The Senior Comparative Medicine Specialist is capable of performing all animal husbandry duties from Trainee to Comparative Medicine Specialist. The CM Specialist serves as a floor lead, acting as a liaison between the assistant supervisor and husbandry staff. They will also assist in veterinary medicine and other duties as required.

Requirements

  • H.S./G.E.D.
  • 3 - 5 years animal care experience
  • AALAS (LATg Level)

Responsibilities

  • Provide animals with clean cages, water, and food.
  • Identify functional caging equipment and report equipment maintenance.
  • Sanitize cages using washroom equipment.
  • Remove waste material such as bedding, trash, etc.
  • Ensure clean and operating equipment (racks and biological cabinets).
  • Make adjustments to equipment as needed and make minor decisions in the use of equipment.
  • Understand the function of various equipment within the facility (tunnel washer, rack washer, autoclave, bottle filler, etc.) to prevent damage or loss of time.
  • Provide a clean and safe work environment.
  • Report facility damage to the supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean work area.
  • Sanitize and disinfect cage wash, equipment, and other facility areas.
  • Identify, record, and report environmental conditions.
  • Identify health-related issues.
  • Record and report issues to veterinary staff.
  • Euthanize animals upon request.
  • Follow detailed written instructions in performing routine work, paying close attention to details.
  • Record cage census as required.
  • Provide a clean and safe atmosphere for animals, employees, and facility users.
  • Contribute and recommend new ideas and input on problem-solving issues.
  • Participate in departmental training of various areas comprising animal, facility, and employment-related issues.
  • Contribute to the workforce and environment by exhibiting newly learned skills and sharing newly found knowledge with others.
