About The Position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas is seeking a Senior Cloud Engineer for its Information Technology organization. The role combines public cloud architecture expertise with traditional systems engineering experience in virtualization, Linux administration, and server lifecycle management. The engineer will design, deploy, secure, and operate production workloads across UNLV’s hybrid infrastructure, including on-premises virtualization and Microsoft Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud Platform. The position supports university teaching, learning, research, and administration through reliable infrastructure, customer-focused service, and collaboration with faculty, business teams, and vendors. The successful candidate will contribute to modernization and operational transparency initiatives and help advance UNLV’s campus values of mutual respect, belonging, innovation, collaboration, and excellence.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or an accepted equivalent: four additional years of relevant experience in lieu of a bachelor’s degree, or an associate degree plus two additional years of relevant experience.
Seven years of related professional experience in systems engineering.
Knowledge of maintaining applications and performing system version upgrades at a senior level.
Knowledge of applying patches, performance tuning, troubleshooting, security monitoring and enforcement, and advanced system administration at a senior level.
Ability to create and maintain accurate, current documentation and plan, manage, and supervise applications at a senior level.
Knowledge of project planning, milestones, completion criteria, timetables, project goals, quality deliverables, and timely project completion at a senior level.
Knowledge of server and client migration between software releases, capacity planning, disaster recovery planning and implementation, and server performance optimization.
Knowledge of improving server performance and availability and maximizing system security at a senior level.
Knowledge of IP addressing, firewalls, routing, switching, server virtualization management, local and federated account security, system hardening, service failover, fault tolerance, and multi-tiered and public cloud configurations.
Knowledge of engineering automation workflows that use Infrastructure-as-Code, including hybrid-environment infrastructure provisioning.
Effective senior-level communication, system administration, project planning and implementation, and research and development skills.
High ethical standards; attention to detail; teamwork; strong customer service; analytical ability; effective verbal and written communication; and ability to organize and prioritize.
Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently; move objects; perform work that involves mostly sitting with occasional walking or standing; and exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, particularly during system installations.

Responsibilities

Design, deploy, and manage virtualized and cloud compute infrastructure, including Nutanix and VMware hypervisors, Veeam backup and recovery, and public cloud compute, storage, and networking services.
Administer and secure Linux and Windows server environments across physical, virtual, and cloud platforms.
Manage server and systems lifecycles, including provisioning, patching, version upgrades, performance tuning, and decommissioning.
Build and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform, ARM/Bicep, or CloudFormation, and automation or scripting using Python, PowerShell, or Bash.
Provision and manage GPU and specialized compute resources for research and academic workloads.
Design and support virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and custom compute solutions for campus use cases.
Implement and enforce security and governance standards across systems and cloud platforms, including identity and access management and compliance controls.
Monitor system and service health, plan for capacity and growth, and lead problem analysis, documentation, backup, and disaster recovery.
Collaborate with university faculty, business teams, and vendors to support modernization and operational transparency initiatives.
Maintain a customer-focused approach: understand customer needs, help solve problems, provide timely updates, take ownership of inquiries and assignments, and interact professionally and respectfully.
Plan, engineer, implement, deploy, and iterate hybrid infrastructure to accomplish institutional goals.
Research and evaluate new technology and incorporate applicable technologies into existing topologies.
Plan and manage projects, migrations, system upgrades, and application maintenance while ensuring quality deliverables and timely completion.
