Senior Cloud Architect - Data Services
About The Position
The Senior Cloud Architect will join Akamai’s global Cloud Data Services team, which designs, builds, and operates high-reliability, high-scale data services and pipelines powering core platform capabilities. The team owns systems that ingest, process, and serve high-volume, high-velocity data and must meet strict availability, consistency, and performance requirements. The role balances architecture design, hands-on development, coaching engineers, clarifying requirements, and driving execution in alignment with product and SRE partners. It focuses on providing technical direction and delivering scalable, secure, resilient, and highly available cloud and data architectures.
Requirements
- 12 years of relevant experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, MIS, another related field, or equivalent.
- Expertise developing reusable infrastructure using Terraform modules, templates, and deployment patterns.
- Ability to develop scripts and automation using Python, Go, Bash, or similar languages.
- Deep knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases, including PostgreSQL, Oracle Database, and MongoDB.
- Hands-on experience with in-memory and key-value technologies such as Redis and Valkey.
- Understanding of distributed data systems designed for horizontal scalability and high availability.
Responsibilities
- Design scalable, secure, resilient, and highly available cloud and data architectures.
- Evaluate cloud technologies and determine their suitability for new platform capabilities and services.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for database architectures, including PostgreSQL and Oracle.
- Design highly available, replicated, clustered, and geographically distributed database architectures.
- Build prototypes, proof of concepts, and reference implementations to validate scalability and security.
- Convert successful prototypes into repeatable architecture patterns and production-ready designs.
- Coach engineers, clarify requirements, and drive execution in alignment with product and SRE partners.
