About The Position

Reporting to the Regional Clinical Engineering Leader, the Senior Clinical Engineer works independently and uses advanced expertise to lead complex and/or major departmental projects/initiatives across the serviced Organizations (Fraser Health, Vancouver Coastal Health, Providence Health Care and the Provincial Health Services Authority). The Senior Clinical Engineer conducts critical, complex risk management and incident investigation activities. Assists the Regional Leader in providing strategic planning and management of the Regional Engineering portfolio. Provides technical leadership, mentorship and supervision of Clinical Engineers and other staff for designated projects and activities. Represents LMBME on various internal and external decision-making committees/groups. Supervises regional team(s) of specialized biomedical technologists.

Requirements

  • A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Master's Degree in Engineering or closely related field plus minimum five (5) years ‘recent, related clinical engineering experience in a hospital environment.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer with Engineering and Geoscientists BC.
  • Certification by the ACCE Healthcare Technology Certification Commission.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of engineering principles
  • Sound knowledge of CSA standards, the Canadian Electrical Code and Health Canada regulations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health sciences.
  • Advanced analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Proficiency in the operation of a broad range of electronic test equipment and medical instruments.
  • Demonstrated leadership and accountability skills.
  • Ability to coach, mentor and lead others.
  • Demonstrated information technology knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the planning and implementation of major/complex regional project activities by assessing needs and priorities, defining objectives and outcomes, and implementing strategies for success.
  • Conducts complex, critical risk management activities for LMBME by establishing and reviewing risk management protocols such as incident investigations, hazard and recall monitoring, etc., and ensures that appropriate actions are implemented.
  • Develops and reviews hospital protocols that deal with the safe use, management, and support of medical technology.
  • Assists the Regional Clinical Engineering Leader in providing strategic planning, management and direction for LMBME and the Regional Engineering portfolio and the delivery services including defining resource needs and service delivery models.
  • Acts for the Regional Leader for specific durations including assuming responsibility for operational budget and budget decisions in their absence.
  • Represents the Regional Leader, team and LMBME various internal and external decision making committees/groups.
  • Provides technical leadership to Clinical Engineers and other staff for various projects by providing task assignment and selecting staff for assignment based on capabilities. Acts as a resource and mentor for team members.
  • Participates in the interview, selection and training of new employees and career development activities.
  • Assists Regional Leader with managing human resources matters for team including providing input on staff performance and development matters. Interprets and applies the collective agreements for unionized staff and provides confidential labour relations support and information as required.
  • Assists the clinical services and the Organizations with strategic planning as it relates to medical technology.
  • Supervises the work of entry-level Clinical Engineers as appropriate.
